Personal Piety\n\nGODFREY L.DIEKMANN,O.S.B. \nFor some Catholics, the very wording of the title\"Liturgy and PersonalPiety\"may sound questionable,if not downright contradictory.Manythoroughly devout persons have lamented openly or have at least feltin their heart of hearts that their personal piety is being threatened bywhat amounts to a liturgical collectivism. They are being asked topray together,to sing together, are even told in Mass after Mass whento stand and sit together. They feel that with all this growing emphasison community participation, there simply is no time for recollection, forpersonal intimate communing with God.Some have forthrightly statedtheir conviction that the so-called liturgical renewal is in reality thedeath of true devotion. \nThese complaints cannot be brushed aside;they must be takenseriously, for they undoubtedly voice the anguish of people concernedabout ultimate, sacred realities of the gravest importance. \nBefore even trying to answer these complaints may I be permittedto outline the intentions of the Council in its Constitution on the SacredLiturgy in regard to the area of liturgy and the person. In view of thedevotional difficulties now experienced by many people of undoubtedgood will,it may seem paradoxical for me to claim that the Christianperson and his personal rights as a worshipper were the foremost andmost all-pervading concern of the document on the liturgy. And yetthis is without question the case.In the very first article we read: \n\"It is the goal of this most sacred Council to intensify the dailygrowth of Catholics in Christian living;and(secondly)to make moreresponsive to the requirements of our times those Church observances(and this certainly includes the liturgy)which are open to adaptation.\" \n\"The requirements of our times.\"(Later documents, borrowing thewords of Pope John, would speak of\"the signs of our times.\")Nowwhatever historians of the future will have to say about our era, theywill undoubtedly underscore the unique and unparalleled emphasis atpresent being given to the dignity of the human person—and this despitethe equally unparalleled inhumanity of man to man that the world hasexperienced in our own times.Freedom, the right to work and education, and other inalienable rights, the emancipation of women, religious liberty \n1 This article is reprinted
