Prayers\n\nVIETNAM \nAfter all my reading, sifting, reflecting tonight, where am I left?Impressive religious men have urged me to judge the Vietnam war,as we now wage it,immoral, and to set this judgment into activeprotest.Martin Luther King,John C.Bennett,Reinhold Niebuhr,Robert McAfee Brown,Abraham Heschel,Michael Novak:this isan impressive list of churchmen.Their statements abound in factand persuasive moral principles. What, then,do I conclude,Lord? \nBy this evidence,it appears that my country has little legalright to be in Vietnam, and that it has blundered into a blind alleyof military escalation.Dr.Bennett made the most salient point ina recent lecture:there is simply no proportion between the ends wepursue in Vietnam and the means we employ. We are devastatingthe country beyond any good which its“liberation”holds out.Notethe inhuman mechanisms(e.g.,napalm),the torture of prisoners, thevast“accidental”killing of civilians, the defoliation of the land, and(if this data is correct)you have some specifications of such dis-proportion.In addition, the ambiguity of our policies, the credibilitygap in our information, and the general lack of diplomatic imaginationall cast the Administration in a very bad light. Finally, the ultimatequestion:would a Communist Vietnam be so bad that it warrantsthis massive series of preventives?Would we not do much moregood if we put our military billions into poverty warfare, both athome and abroad? \nSo,I guess,I am inclined to agree with these leaders(reservingultimate judgment on their facts),and to maintain their tentative ver-dict that our present course is unwise and immoral. What now is myobligation before you?At least,to pray for peace—for all the changesof heart it will require.Have mercy on our blindness,Lord.Weakenour pride, increase our humility, heap up our compassion a hundred-fold.Keep us from simple-minded slogans, from antique nationalismand callous inhumanity. But must I not also do something political? It is not my inclination or style to write letters or join rallies.Prob- \nably,I must change my inclination and style. It is not my interestto read the newspapers, sifting out their endless gorge of facts.Probably,I must get this interest. The whole practical point,it seems,is to get to the policy makers. As my religious informants insist, the best role for the Churches is concerted moral protest,so loudthat it cannot be ignored.Part of the task of marshaling this opinionfalls on me.It is something I could
