progress in human relations and in ecumenicaldialogue depends upon the attainment and preservation of a balancebetween man's profound desire for truth and his need for reciprocallove.Man thirsts for truth and cannot live without love.Theseare two dynamisms within us to which we must be faithful if weare to achieve union among men and bear witness to Christ andthe truth he embodies. \nThe greatest obstacle we have in achieving this end is anobstacle which Cardinal Bea describes as the difficulty of knowing \nhow to combine both tendencies harmoniously, giving to eachits own place, its own importance, without harming one to thebenefit of the other. For we know that the love of truth withoutcharity becomes intolerant and is repulsive, and charity withouttruth is blind and cannot endure. We must,therefore,con-stantly react against any inclination in us to separate love fromtruth. \nBefore we begin,we must focus our area of reflection moreprecisely.Ultimately, the common ground for an authentic ecu-menism is the faith (love of revealed truth)and charity to whichCardinal Bea refers. However, even though the capacity for thelove of God(charity)in us is a gift of God,who is Love, andthe desire for the fulness of truth(faith)is a gift of God,whois Truth, grace does not destroy but elevates and transforms humannature. This context of grace is a presupposition of our discussion. The human demands we make of ourselves to balance our dynamismtoward Truth and Love require the support of grace. In order toreach a deeper understanding of our supernatural vocation, weare going to try to understand our dual dynamism to know andlove on the natural level and build on the fact that grace doesnot destroy but elevates this dynamism to a supernatural end. \nOur first task is to consider what we mean by truth. All ofus have some knowledge of what the world and life are.Although \nwe know that we don't know everything,we do have a sense ofthe whole of reality about us.In other words, because we arespirits incarnate we can transcend our material insertion in theworld. We first consider the whole of reality as being,as some-thing which exists.During the course of our lives we gain moredetailed knowledge of being. We get to know John and Peter, what flowers and bees are, what water and trees are,and how allof these beings live and interact. Some of us get to know God,because we have received the gift of faith, and we learn what animportant place he has in","cbCaim8ZvJ64ydx1","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaim8ZvJ64ydx1","pdf",1364066,36,"English","# Fidelity to Truth
