rational formulations in nearly every field of social endeavor, many theologians have in recent years turned their attention tovarious practical aspects of the Christian's ascetical life(for ex-ample,Karl Rahner's Theology of Death,E.H.Schillebeeckx's TheLayman in the Church,Vatican II's schema on“The Church inthe Modern World\"),reviewing past conclusions and re-interpretingthem from the side of the person and the community of personswhich is the Church. One such vital area undergoing this theo-logical scrutiny is that of the religious vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.1 \nBecause of the modern concern for personal liberty,a concernflowing over into the cloisters of religious, there is more than evera need for increasing clarity concerning the relationship of libertyand law,the spirit of law and its letter, person and authority, thepromptings of the Spirit and the commands of obedience.Formany religious the traditional expounding of this vow leaves muchto be answered,is neither fully satisfying nor clear, and indeedis often too weighted on the side of the law, authority, and theletter, with only insufficient and cursory attention being given tothe more vitally personal realms of prudence and the Spirit. \nLet us,then, consider the religious vow of obedience fromthis modern viewpoint;that is,as present-day theologians takinginto explicit account the inestimable worth of the individual—inhimself and in a community of persons—as revealed and stressedso strongly in modern Christian existential thought. To do thiswe will first review, according to the interpretation of Father Stan-islaus Lyonnet,S.J.,2 the doctrinal relationship of liberty and lawas it is principally found in Saint Paul's Letter to the Christiansin Rome. With this theoretical foundation and in the general con- \n1 Cf.Karl Rahner,S.J.,\"Reflections on Obedience,\"Cross Currents,Vol.X,1960,p.363,col.1. \n2 Stanislaus Lyonnet,S.J.,\"St.Paul:Liberty and Law,\"The
