Prayer as Leisure\n\nThe guides for this reflection on prayer as leisure are notablyFather Voillaume, the Prior General of the Little Brothers of Jesus(in his book Seeds of the Desert)and Therese, particularly,I wouldsay,Hans Urs von Balthasar's book on Therese.I want to talkabout prayer within the context of action and work,as makingsense only in this context, and yet as decidedly different fromaction.I would suggest\"different,“not theologically so much aspsychologically.By this I simply mean that prayer is not action andaction is not prayer, and any kind of formula that says that everyaction we make is a prayer is obviously using“prayer”in someextended sense. It may be fruitful,it may be useful to get a personout of a difficulty, but it doesn't convey the reality because thereare obviously different postures for action and for prayer and sowe can say there are distinct categories. \nPrayer is not action nor is action prayer, just as work is notleisure. And interestingly enough,an article by Sister Ritamaryin one of the early Sister Formation Bulletins gives an analysiswhich I suspect is accurate of the“works”that Saint John of theCross always opposes to prayer. He is not referring to one's beingbusy with doing something but to a multiplicity of prayers. He istalking about pious works in the sense of prayers, and means todiscourage people from prayers that get in the way of prayer. \nNow the key to the life of the spirit, for an incarnate spirit,is the character of organic life generally.Organic life knows arhythm and this rhythm keys into our life of the spirit.Sleepcovers to some extent at least the pattern of night and day, andif there seems to be no apparent physiological reason for sleep thereis certainly a psychological one:to enable us to face life one dayat a time. It's a rather metaphysical sort of thing.Stop and reflecthow impossible life would be if we never went to sleep! There isalso a cultural and religious rhythm in the week as opposed to theweekend, hence the importance of Sunday. It is a rhythm whichagain reflects on a somewhat different scale the organic rhythm ofnight and day.\"Weekend“has a lilt to it.It means that somehow, \nin some way, hopefully we'll be off the treadmill for a while.Andthere is a psychological, mystical rhythm as well, the rhythm ofconcern and consent:concern for the apostolate and consent to thefact that we are God's instruments in the apostolate.I want totalk about all these r","cbCaipYvAMKA2HwV","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipYvAMKA2HwV","pdf",1289899,36,"English","# Prayer as Leisure\n##
