From Penguins to Personalities\n\nPROFESSOR HORTON DAVIES \nThis little essay begins as an insult but is intended as a tribute toCatholic Sisters from a Protestant minister. How could anyone thinkof nuns as penguins, unless he were an atheist like Anatole France? It is a very confused picture, combining a Dominican scapular witha Benedictine habit. Moreover,it's terribly pre-Vatican I(the ulti-mate in liberal Catholic insults,as I've discovered:the dodo is notmore dead).A thoroughly modern(Sister)Millie may resemble aCelestial Airways air-hostess,a graceful gipsy,or a superior nursein her habit, but never a penguin. Then why does this obduratewriter insist on penguins in the title? \nPrecisely because this is the first impression given to the out-sider by a flock of Sisters.(Better a flock than a gaggle!)Dignified, starched, stuffy, impersonal and a little antiquated, like a primgargoyle medievally out of place in a functional Breuer church.Firstimpressions are notably powerful;happily they can also be gravelymisleading. It was my joy to discover that the penguin image fadedas the many Sisters in Saint John's University Summer School edu-cated me and I saw them as personalities, rich in their individualityand blessedly different in their backgrounds, experiences, talents, training and services to the Catholic Church. For me this was themost important discovery of the summer.I am writing this articleas a kind of corporate testimonial and as an encouragement. \n## DEFINITIONS DISMISSED\n\nNow that my stereotype of Sisters is rudely and rightly shatteredI am very doubtful about all definitions.(They become 'daffynitions'all too readily.)What is a Sister? The answer would have to includethe arty and crafty(‘peachiest'?)Sister Corita of California and theanthropologist,Sister Inez of Saint Benedict’s Priory,Saint Joseph, who led a National Geographic expedition to study the Ainu,aCaucasian enclave in Hokkaido, and who would put a 37-year oldto shame with her indefatigable intelligence and devotion. How canI think of starched penguins when I recall some of the summer'sexperiences we shared? \nThere was the Hootenanny at which a Franciscan Sister danceda jig(la danseuse de Notre Dame?),several Bahamian Benedictinesgarbed in gray sang joyously in calypso style, accompanied withguitars, and an ample Sister of the Holy Cross from New Englandbrought the house down as she exploded into patriotism and cowedus all into bawling\"America the Beautiful\"as if it were the latestweapon against the Viet Cong! And you should see Sisters playingbaseball—there are no baser players! \nI've seen Sisters having almost to be expelled from the libraryat
