The text contrasts atheistic existentialism’s view of a godless universe with a theistic and ecumenical optimism expressed through consecrated virginity. It argues that consecrated chastity is sustained by faith, functioning as a living sign to both Christian and non-Christian worlds, while also critiquing internal failures to communicate its value.",{"@graph":14,"@context":72},[15,34,55],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/religion-spirituality/","Religion & Spirituality",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/sisters-today-january-1966-volume-37-number-5-the-virgin-an-ecumenical-figure/321206/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/sisters-today-january-1966-volume-37-number-5-the-virgin-an-ecumenical-figure/321206.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Aria","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-06","2026-09-21",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":33},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",{"@type":56,"mainEntity":57},"FAQPage",[58,64,68],{"name":59,"@type":60,"acceptedAnswer":61},"What does “The Virgin: An Ecumenical Figure” argue about the meaning of virginity?","Question",{"text":62,"@type":63},"It presents virginity as an ecumenical sign, expressing an optimism irreducible to natural causes. Virgin:An Ecumenical Figure\n\nTHOMAS DUBAY,S.M. \nTo the natural man, atheistic existentialism,if it is anything at all,is an eloquent and biting witness to the terrifying emptiness of agodless and therefore absurd universe. From the vantage point ofa purposeless cosmos the earth is empty and the person's positionin it pitiful.Human pleasures are preceded and followed by pain, friendships are terminated by separation and loss if not by conflictand bitterness, honors are fleeting and voracious. And loomingbehind it all is the always closer spectre of a death, final andblack and frustrating. The universe is icy. \nEven on the less terrifying level of the theistic but merelynatural man,the universe remains pitiful enough in demandinga plentiful share of wordly pleasure if it is to remain tolerableto the boundless desires of the strangely infinite seeking of man.Position, prestige, pleasure—these the natural man must have inabundance. If one doubts this, let him consult the unexpressedmajor premise of almost all contemporary advertising, advertisingwhich has an adept hand on the pulse of what men really want. \nVoluntary virginity to the natural man or woman is enigmaticat best, pitiful at worst. It is a negation of the scraps of delightavailable in an essentially hostile world.Human love and affec-tion,freedom of movement and decision, position through propertyand wealth, pleasure in sex and fruitfulness through it—these arethe sole consolations a man or woman can find in a life that mustinevitably be hemmed in by sorrow and terminated by death.Thata blossoming youth should with eyes open choose to decline whatalone makes life bearable is sheer nonsense to the natural manand woman. In this view virginity is a sterile negation—dull,im-personal,introspective,cheerless,loveless.¹It is anything butcommon sense to the common man. \nIf we understand ecumenism as embracing all men, pagan aswell as Christian,a virginal life cheerfully and gladly and fruitfully \n1 Incidently, one may not be blamed for wondering to what extentCatholic parental opposition to religious vocations is partially rooted in thisoutlook. \nembraced for a personal God cannot, once it is understood, fail toimpress us as ecumenical,as shouting to the world a remarkableoptimism irreducible to natural causes.Consecrated virginitycrowns a
