It frames vocation through biblical and theological dimensions rather than purely psychological analysis, emphasizing God’s universal initiative and the human response as partial. It illustrates the call of God through Old Testament examples, highlighting Israel’s election, covenant, and the historical pattern of fidelity and failure, death, and loss of Vocation\n\nWhat are priestly and religious vocations? How can they be iden-tified and what is their nature? These are questions to which wewish to address ourselves in this article. Our purpose is not todelve into the psychological phenomenon of vocation but to in-vestigate its biblical and theological dimensions. This is not to saythat psychology does not enjoy its own field of investigation—thebehavior and conduct of men even as regards the subject of voca-tion.But it is a recognition of the fact that man’s behavior ismotivated by many and varied forces. In the subject matter athand—the Christian vocation to the priesthood and the religiouslife—the biblical, theological, and spiritual forces are paramount.Through the centuries volumes of literature have been written onthis subject;we can only present what we consider a broad outlineof the fruits of these studies. \nIf the psychological study of vocation cannot abstract fromthe biblical and theological study of vocation, neither can the bib-lical and theological study of vocation neglect the personal call ofall men to enter the kingdom of God.A marvelous truth ofChristianity is this:God has taken the initiative in the pursuit ofmen.God has made the first move,to speak the anthropomorphiclanguage of the Bible. If anything is clearly stupendous in thehistory of our salvation,it is that God has condescended to callus into his vision and presence. His love toward us has constrainedhim to emit a universal call to peace and glory. Thus,we can saythat a universal call has gone out from God,a call that awaits theresponse of man.The divine call is universal but the human re-sponse is partial, both in the individual man and in the whole ofhumankind. The history of salvation is a history of God's advancesand of man's response or failure to respond. \nCALL OF GOD \nPerhaps we can bring this universal vocation into sharper focusif we select a few examples from the pages of Scripture. The entireOld Testament manifests the amazing truth that Israel as a whole \nwas the object of God's election and predilection.Witness thispassage from the book of Deuteronomy,a passage which capturesbeautifully God's attitude toward his chosen people: \nFor you are a people sacred to the Lord, your God;he has chosenyou from all the nations on the face of the earth to be a peoplepeculiarly his own.It was not because you are the largest of allnations that the Lord set his heart on you and","cbCaicSqKggy8doF","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicSqKggy8doF","pdf",1653479,44,"English","# Explore
