ofindividuals. At first such a statement shocks most hearers, and appearsto be merely a new liberal view. But when it is seriously pondered,it is seen to make good sense. No human being is an automaton, butan autonomous person with all the dignity and worth that belongsto a person as a unique being embracing and summing up in himselfall the wondrous realities of creation. Each individual person isworthy of respect in his uniqueness, and cannot be merely categorizedimpersonally into a certain mold, almost in terms of a thing. It isvery important that all those in authority try to know their subjects, truly listen to them,be available to them, and try to understandthem. In the past we perhaps have legislated for abuses, and thushave not allowed room for individual differences or have not takeninto account the uniqueness of different individuals.Perhaps instancesof this have arisen from the concept of responsibility held by manysuperiors,a concept that the prime responsibility for the spiritualwell-being of subjects rested with the superior.Such a concept iserroneous because it takes no account of the responsibility of theindividual—the response to the saving word of God which must bemade by each individual who hears this word.Superiors are notresponsible for subjects as such;their responsibility centers on thecreation of climactic conditions in which individuals can grow intotruly responsible persons, ever growing in Christ to a mature depth.Authority must be concerned primarily with the creation of conditionsfavorable to the growth and maturing of the autonomous individual, and then with the direction of the individual to attainment of growthin Christ. \nIn the past authority often has been exercised by imposingobligations on individuals, requiring them to fulfill certain dutiesand precepts for the sake of regularity and a well-ordered house. Most often religious houses have been marked by a somewhat cold, impersonal atmosphere, and the goodness(or not-so-goodness)of a \nreligious was measured in terms of a perfunctory, organized mannerof living. This was the result of a misplaced emphasis on order asan end in itself.Order is important in a religious house, but onlyas a means—a means of creating conditions of peace, joy, and harmonyfor the flourishing of the life of the Spirit. The Spirit prompts theindividual person, calls him, invites him to an ever deepening experi-ence of the Christ-life;the harmony of the religious house helps theindividual to
