Consideration should be taken to the specific conditions of the region in which your work is being conducted, and modifications to procedures made accordingly to ensure the best welfare of the animal and safety of the project participants. Any modifications required should be outlined in the project application. \nThe CDU AEC approves the following SOP with the below amendments/conditions: \n• Temperature control must stay within 30 to 34 degrees Celsius within the pouch, caution is advised for use of boiling water in heat packs. \n• The Committee recommends that timeframes for obtaining care be adjusted according to joey development stage, as survival varies from likely non-viable in unfurred \"pinkies\" to up to 24 hours for furred pouch young at stable temperatures. \n• The AEC recommends that field carers carry rehydration formula rather than milk formula (to assist with challenges with spoilage and temperature control) . \n• Section 5.1 In the Northern Territory, it is important to be mindful not to overheat all joeys (not just larger, fully haired joeys) . The requirement for recommended heat packs should be based on maintaining pouch temperatures to an optimal range of 30-34 ℃ \n• Section 5.5.2 In the Northern Territory, Wildcare NT is the licensed rescue organisation. \nAt the time of review the Phone contact details are 89886 121͕ \n• Section 5.5 Euthanising Joeys: The SOP states that joeys' chances of survival without \nappropriate care within six hours are significantly reduced. \nThe AEC requires that researchers discuss this time frame with the wildlife carer nominated in their project application to determine whether there is adequate justification for euthanasia. \nStandard Operating Procedure \nSC24-05 SHORT-TERM JOEY INTERVENTION PROCEDURES \nAnimal welfare is the responsibility of all personnel involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes. \nPersonnel involved in an Animal Ethics Committee approved project should read and understand their obligations under the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes. \nVersion 1.3 August 2024 \nDepartment of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions Locked Bag 104 \nBentley Delivery Centre WA 6983 Phone: (08) 9219 9000 \nFax: (08) 9334 0498 \n[www.dbca.wa.gov.au](www.dbca.wa.gov.au) \n© Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions on behalf of the State of Western Australia 2024 \nAugust 2024 \nThis work is copyright.
