Inspired by Father’s claim that he can “capture a tiger,” Grandfather reveals the real meaning: the “tiger” symbolizes intellect. He teaches bagh bandi (sholo guti), a two-player marble game with rules for moving along board lines and capturing by jumping over opponent pieces, showing that winning demands careful strategy rather than luck.","Sholo Guti: Let’s Play ”Capture the \nTiger” \nIffat Jahan Tusher \nMoumita Sikder \nCoronavirus had spread and everyone was on lockdown . There were no classes at school. No one even came over to play in the afternoon. Father only left to go shopping. Rumi didn’t like being stuck in the house. \nThe only fun part of the day was when everyone ate together. At the dinner table, Mother, Father, Rumi’s younger sister, Titli, and Grandfather told each other stories. \nBefore lockdown they hadn’t told so many stories. \nOne morning at breakfast Father said,”You know Rumi, I can capture a tiger.” \nCapture a tiger? Rumi’s eyes opened wide with wonder! \n”Father, you’re so brave,” Rumi said, amazed. Titli was also amazed and said,”Father, I want to capture the tiger too. Teach me .” \nFather laughed and said,”Your grandfather is even better at it than me . ” \nRumi looked at Grandfather, surprised. Grandfather looked over his glasses with a twinkle in his eye and said,”Your father’s right. Tigers can be captured, but not the kind of tigers you’re thinking of.” \nRumi was even more surprised. \nGrandfather said, “This tiger is a symbol of one’s intellect. To catch this tiger we need to think carefully and outsmart our opponent. Instead of tigers, we play this game with playing pieces we call marbles or guti. So \nsome people call this game guti, or sholo guti because there are 16guti. I call it bagh bandi.”Rumi couldn’t contain his excitement. He exclaimed, “Grandfather, I want to play bagh bandi too!” \nAfter lunch, Rumi and Grandfather sat on the veranda. Titli joined them. \u003Cspan style=”color: rgb(0,0,0); font-size: 16px;”>Grandfather drew the bagh bandi playing board on the ground with chalk. \u003C/span> \n\u003Cspan style=”color: rgb(0,0,0); font-size: 16px;”>He explained,”This is a two-player game. There are sixteen marbles. The board has many lines and the marbles start on the points where the lines meet. We start by arranging my marbles on my side of the \nboard and yours on your side.” Then he said,”When it’s your turn, you can do one of two moves . You can move your marbles from one point to another empty point. The marblescan only move along the lines that connect the points. Or you can capture the opponent’s guti by jumping your marbles over theirs to an empty point on the other side. You can capture several of your opponent’s marblesin one turn, as long as on each move you’re jumping over an opponent’s marble to an empty spot.” Grandfather asked,”Does that make sense?”\u003C/span> \nRumi replied,”How simple. This game is easy to win!” They started to play and Rumi quickly realized that it’s difficult to win without good strategy. Rumi lost within five minutes of the game starting. \nGrandfather joked, “If you call this game capture the cat, the cat would be angry too!”Rumi smiled at his grandfather’s words.","cbCairgezDIUgcLe","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCairgezDIUgcLe","pdf",3410050,2,28,"English","en",105,"# Lockdown and Family Stories\n## The Tiger as a Symbol of Intellect\n## Learning the Bagh Bandi Rules\n## Playing, Losing, and Growing Strategy","[{\"question\":\"Why does Rumi feel unhappy during lockdown?\",\"answer\":\"Rumi dislikes being stuck in the house, especially because there are no classes and no one comes to play in the afternoon.\"},{\"question\":\"What does Grandfather mean by “capturing a tiger”?\",\"answer\":\"Grandfather explains that the tiger symbolizes intellect, and capturing it means thinking carefully and outsmarting the opponent.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the bagh bandi game work?\",\"answer\":\"It is a two-player game with sixteen marbles placed on starting points.
