\nTo my mother Phyllis Katchera force to be reckoned with \nAnd to my brother, Marc, a true Lamed Vavnick \nPart One Before the Fall \nChapter One \nShellie \nThe reliable daughter passes her parent’s house for the third time in search of a parking space she hopes she won’t find. \nTwo identical rows of red-brick attached houses bracket the street, their long staircases extending from second story entrances all the way to the sidewalk, threatening her like a chorus line of angry Rockettes, poised, ready to kick her if she veers too close to their outstretched legs. Matching metal awnings, like shiny hats, crown terraces that sit atop the roofs of single car garages jutting onto the driveways. \nWho designed these residential boxes, she wonders. They are ugly. They remind her of the Smart Monkey ImagiBricks she played with as a child, made of cardboard, painted with red and white rectangles to look like bricks bound by cement, fooling no one, as easy to knock down as a stack of cards. Even the anemic looking maple trees that line the street are confined to boxes placed at regular intervals along the curbs, their roots, having spread outward over the years, lifting portions of the concrete squares in violent eruptions. Somebody’s gonna have a lawsuit; a mailman, an old lady walking a dog, somebody. \nThe neighborhood was some urban planner ’s idea of efficiency. No artistry involved. If viewed from the street, each two-family house was three stories tall: street level plus a two-story apartment. If viewed from the back, where an alley ran down the center of chain link-fenced yards, \nseparating the properties from those on the next street over, there were four stories, a basement providing access to the yard. \nThe main unit of each two-family home was perfectly designed for a nuclear family of four, although it could be stretched, as in the case of the Parisi family down the block with their six children. But, if the family adhered to the original intent of the architect, there was a place for everything and everyone. The Weiss family adhered. \nShellie, for that is the given name of the reliable daughter, allows her mind to wander, mentally peeling back the exterior wall of the house to imagine her family inside the structure like dolls in a dollhouse, performing their rituals with no idea of the bomb she is about to drop. \nIn her mind’s eye, Bubby, her grandmother, is seated at the dinette table in the kitchen, a quiet observer, having come upstairs from her first-floor apartment. Her bent back leans against the inner wall of the kitchen that separates it from the semi-formal dining area. Bubby sits on half a tuchkas because Bubby never actually sits on a chair with both cheeks but rather perches on a corner, ready to jump at the slightest provocation. She had moved into the ground floor apartment sometime after her husband, Shepsul, died. Shellie barely remembered her Zaide, grandpa in Yiddish, as she had been just about four when he passed. She knew him mostly from family photos and the reverence with which both her mother and grandmother spoke. Until he died, Shellie’s grandparents had lived in a cute little two-bedroom in Brighton Beach, although no one, to Shellie’s knowledge, had ever used that second bedroom except to pile coats when visitors came. In those final years of their enduring marriage, Bubby and Zaide took strolls along the boardwalk, sat on folding chairs in the front of their building in the evenings and chatted with the neighbors as they did in the old days in Brownsville when people still gathered on stoops. They continued to live there even after Zaide had his stroke, collapsing on the sidewalk as he walked to an afternoon game of gin rummy. The strolls were slower after that, his right leg dragging as he walked. Still, they lived together and independently on a second honeymoon of sorts, if they had \never had a first. \nMom and Dad bought the house before Shira was bo","cbCaioF231dgdywH","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaioF231dgdywH","pdf",1833720,201,"English","# Part One Before the Fall\n## Chapter One - Shellie","[{\"question\":\"What motivates Shellie as she searches for a parking space?\",\"answer\":\"Shellie passes her family’s house multiple times looking for parking, hoping she won’t have to face what she is about to do.\"},{\"question\":\"Who are the key people Shellie thinks about in the house?\",\"answer\":\"Shellie focuses on Bubby, her grandmother, and her grandfather Zaide, connecting their earlier life in the home to the present moment.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the neighborhood setting affect the tone of the chapter?\",\"answer\":\"The planned, box-like houses and rigid street design create an oppressive, artificial atmosphere that mirrors the story’s mounting unease.\"}]","Shellie - Part One Before the Fall - Chapter One | PDF",310]
