Toddedition of Spenser's works:\"This is what is technically called a variorumedition,containing a reprint of all the labours of the previous editors....There is a great deal of learned rubbish in it;much trouble is often wastedin elucidating what is plain,and really difficult points are frequentlypassed by in silence”(Hillard,Spenser,I,v-vi).  \nIt soon became evident that Shelley,like Spenser,was not without histribute of learned rubbish,\"which may have led Douglas Bush to suggestthat \"one of the worst things about Shelley is the effect he has on hisadnirers;nearly all of them are reduced to a common denominator,ofwhich the outward evidence is perhaps a wild glitter in the eye”(My-thology,p.156).But in the case of Prometheus Unbound,at least,the judg-ment of Kenneth Neil Cameron is,in the main,both true and pertinent:\"The divergence of [the views on Prometheus Unbound]results,it shouldbe emphasized,not from critical caprice but from genuine difficulty.Prometheus Unbound is unquestionably one of the most profound andsubtle of the great Fnglish poems,And difference and divergence in itsinterpretation are not—as might at first appear—leading us farther fromit but closer to it”(“Shelley Scholarship,”p.100).  \nToo frequently,however,the \"difference and divergence\"in interpreta-tion available to the student are those of a few major names only,and tosuggest,as does Bennett Weaver,that for critical comment on PrometheusUnbound we must\"follow the way of the books—for there are few articleswritten on this drama”(Romantic Poets,p.187),is to overlook a fertilebody of smaller,but certainly not always minor,studies or brief commentswhose impact on our understanding of the poem,and of the changingattitudes toward it,is negligible only because they are in large part in-accessible.A comprehensive variorum treatment of the full range of thesewritings would appear to be the corrective to this situation.For,although  \nviii  \nMatthew Arnold in 1888 could argue that Shelley is not a classic,whosevarious readings are to benoted with earnest attention”(\"Shelley.\"p.20%),the need for such a treatment was evident to Swinburne some twertyyears earlier.He wrote:  \nIt is seldom that the work of a scholiast is so S00 wanted as in Shelley's cave ithas been.The first collected edition of his works had many gaps and errors patentand palpable to any serious reader.His text is already matter for dehate andcomment,as though he were a classic newly unearthed.Certain paSsages wginto be famous as crucial subjects for emendation;and the master singer of ottrmodern poets shares with his own masters and models the least enviable pref offame—that given by corrupt readings and diverse cormentaries\"Notes,\"p.3.1.  \nToday,certainly,only the most prejudiced would dery the desirabilityof the fullest possible light that can be thrown on a poen as coplex,andsubtle,and significant as Prometheus Unbourd,even though a part of thatlight be
