It lodged there painfully, terribly. She doubted she would ever recover.  \nShe’d been waiting for her brother at the far end of the alley behind St. Jude’s. He’d just asked her to come, saying he wanted her there incase something went wrong.  \nSomething had gone wrong.  \nThe first sound she heard wasn’t a gunshot. Not the way she’d ever imagined one would sound. It was a heavy, dull thud, and then her brother’s body hit the wet ground. Lucía was already running before her brain had finished deciding she should.  \nIt seemed so far, so far, and the faster she ran, the farther it seemed tobe. It was twenty-four yards, she’d later measure on a map, over andover, as if the number could give her permission to forgive herself. Twenty-four yards between her and Gabriel. Close enough to hear him fall. Too far to stop what had already started.  \nShe didn’t make it to him in time.  \nA figure was already there. Lucía never understood how the alley could be empty one second and occupied the next. She only remembered fragments after that. Dark hair. A body bent over  \nGabriel.
