\nNEWYORK TORONTO SYDNEY HOLLYWOOD \nISBN 0573014132 \nINTRODUCTION \nGoLDSMITH doubtless wrote She Stoops to Conquer in 1771,for ina letter of his to Bennett Langton, dated September 7th of thatyear,he writes: \nMY DEAR SIR \nSince I had the pleasure of seeing you last,I have been almostwholly in the country,at a farmer's house quite alone, trying to writea comedy. It is now finishcd, but when or how it will be acted, orwhether it will be acted at all,are questions I cannot resolve. \nEvery soul is a visiting abcut and merry but myself. And that ishard, too,as I have bcen trying these three months to do something tomake people laugh::.. \nThe farm-house stood on a gentle eminence in what is calledHyde Lane, near to the six-mile stone on the Edgware Road, andhe occupied his apartment here till the period of his death, thoughstill preserving his char.bers in the Temple. The spot was wellchosen, for few places near a great metropolis are prettier.Fromthe commencement of the theatrical season I772-3 he was anxi-ously endeavouring to procure a representation of his comedy, and in the first instance,it was placed in the hands of Colman, then manager of Covent Garden, but, after a considerable inter-val,returned by him.It was then submitted to Garrick, who dis-played his usual aversion to give a plain answer, and neither adistinct yea or nay could be extracted from him.In this stateof suspense Dr Johnson and other friends of the author againintervened with Colman, who, after urgent solicitations, yieldedreluctant assent to its being brought forward at his theatre.Itmay be interesting here to insert two letters from Goldsmith toGarrick and Colman, without date, but no doubt written inJanuary and February of 1773· \nTo DAVID GARRICK EsQ \nDEAR SIR \nI ask many pardons for the trouble I gave you yesterday.Uponmore mature deliberation, and the advice of a sensible friend,I beganto think it indelicate in me to throw upon you the odium of confirmingMr Colman's sentence.I therefore request you will send my play backby my scrvant, for having been assured of having it acted at the otherhouse, though I confess yours in every respect more to my wish, yet itwould be folly in me to forego an advantage which lies in my powerof appealing from Mr Colman's opinion to the judgment of the town.I entreat,if not too late, you will keep this affair a sccret for some time.I am,dear Sir,your very humble Servant \nOLIVER GoLDSMITH \nTo GEORGE CoLMAN EsQ \nDEAR SIR \nI entreat you'll relieve me from that state of suspense in which Ihave been kept for a long time.Whatever objections you have madeor shall make to my play I will endeavour to remove, and not argueabout them.To bring in any new judges, either of its merits or faults,I can never submit to.Upon a former occasion, when my other playwas before Mr Garrick,he offered to bring me before Mr Whitehead'stribunal, but I refused the proposal with indignation.I hope I shallnot experience as hard treatment from you as from him.I have, asyou know,a large sum of money to make up shortly;by accepting myplay I can readily satisfy my creditor that way;at any rate,I mustlook about to some certainty to be prepared. For God’s sake take theplay, and let us make the best of it,and let me have the same measureat least which you have given as bad plays as mine. \nI am,your friend and ServantOL1VER GoLDSMITH \nDr Johnson, writing to Boswell in February,I773,says:\"DrGoldsmith has a new comedy, which is expected in the spring. No name is yet given it.The chief diversion arises from a strata-gem by which a lover is made to mistake his future father-in-law'shouse for an inn. This, you see, borders upon farce. The dialogueis quick and gay,and the incidents are so prepared as not to seemimprobable.”Again,on March 4th,he writes:\"Dr Goldsmithhas a new comedy in rehearsal at Covent Garden,t","cbCaibKmOdDtU1LM","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibKmOdDtU1LM","pdf",2596384,76,"English","# Introduction\n## Authorship
