94. \nIt is too soon to appraise his work in the literaryelysium of which he is now a member.I have to re-member him as he was when he lived. The memory ofhis most pleasantly modulated voice, which could takethe sting even out of his most pungent remark—thetilt of the chin—the beard, always with that touch ofIrish red—his exquisite gift of paradox—his deep in-terest in music. \nThe world knows Shaw was a vegetarian. It isalso known that he was an ardent anti-vivisectionist.Inboth cases he was living his beliefs. He was motivatedby the highest humanitarian ideals, but he was also prac-tical about them. His precepts became his deeds. \nShaw's contentions regarding vivisection werebased not upon blind and embittered prejudice andemotionalism, but rather upon clear reasoning.Fromthe welter of confusion surrounding the subject he with-drew the crucial point:all experiments, like other humanactivities, must be lawful and humane;there must berespect for the lower orders of life. The altruistic mag-nitude of his thinking is well shown in the poemLiving Graves \nWe are the living graves of murdered beasts,Slaughtered to satisfy our appetites. We never pause to wonder at our feasts,If kine, like men,can possibly have rights. We pray on Sundays that we may have light \nTo guide our footsteps on the path we tread. We're sick of War—we do not want to fight—The thought of it now fills our hearts with dread. And yet—we gorge ourselves upon the dead!Like carrion crows we live and feed on meat,Regardless of the suffering and painWe cause by doing so.If thus we treatDefenseless animals for sport or gain,How can we hope in this world to attainThe peace we say we are so anxious for? \nShaw recognized that animal life has reason forits existence, quite apart from serving man.The animalscame first in the scale of evolution;they were made\"for themselves, for their own joy,to fulfill someworthier function in nature than provide repasts for menand women who have reversed the order of nature inthemselves and grown into carnivorous animals.\"Ourcivilization is disgraced by the fact that we must havesocieties for the prevention of cruelty to animals—it isnot flattering that the humane individuals among usmust take steps to prevent the cruelties of vivisection. \nI sincerely hope that you,the reader, will be in-spired to make amends in your own deeds and thoughtsby the clarion appeal to logic in this little book.Thiswould be the highest tribute you could pay Shaw.Ithink that is what he would like you to do. \nRUSSELL F.KNUTSON \nChicago,I950
