into\"DISCARD\"Because they are over 40 years of age? \nRead………Think.………Act \nFor Your Consideration \n….by the. \nNational Association For TheBenefit of Middle Age Employees507 Fifth AvenueNew York City,N.Y. \nec.2.197b Aev \nExcerpts from: \nNORTH AMERICAN REVIEW—May,1928Title of Article—\"OLD AGE AT 50\" \nDy HoN.JAMES J.DAVISSecretary of Labor of the United States \nIt is true that many an American employercan testify to the worker whom he has trainedand fitted into his organization, often at con-siderable cost of patience, materials and time, only to find that worker ready to leave him forany,or no apparent reason. This other side ofour restless ambition has long given industryone of its problems. \n## —PURPOSE一\n\nThe Association object is the breakingdown of the barrier now prevalent againstemploying men and women over 40 years ofage.Agreat army of men and women,physic-ally and mentally fit, experienced, sober, intnlligent, steady, strong of heart and limb, ambitious, full of energv;forced to idlenessby a majority of employers in favor of youth \nNow we hear more and more of anotherproblem:that of the worker whose employer iswilling to releare him, whatever his skil andvalue, for no other cause than that he hasreached an age beyond which it is thought beis or will be useless.Often enough in my ownearly days in the mill,I had seen this senselesspractice, and more often seen it since.Sooneror later it seemed to me this habit of early dis-charge might become an issue in our \"Industriallife\".It has been referred to by many writers.Evidently the topic is “alive and burning”.This habit of arbitrary discharge,at an arbi-trary age,has affected,or aroused,it seems, more people than I supposed could be con-cerned. \n2 \nIn the steel and iron mills,in the case of thehardier specimens,it was simply absurd to losetheir hard-earned valuable knowledge and skill, merely because they had lived a certain numberof years, often the very labor which taught themso much in mind had only toughened themphysically.None knew this so well as such menthemselves, and they cheerfully lied about theiryears, where men were afraid of the 50 yearrule,no man in the mills would admit he wasover 48.Many a good stout worker, grown greyat the temples, was known to darken bis hairwith soot from the furnace;he always strove torival or outdo the younger men about him, andhe often succeeded,to the satisfaction of him-self and the amusement of others;frequentlythe \"bosses,\"who knowing the worth of themen, were eager and anxious to keep them.(Many a man of 50 was presented with a goldwatch and his discharge at the same ceremony.) \nNow it appears, this arbitrary discharge ofthe worker, regardless of his fitness at an agearbitrarily fxed,is becoming a general policy. The policy is spreading through the executiveoffices of business, just as it spread through fac-tory and shop. The tendency is to fix the ageof retirement at a limit ever progressively lower.By some employers it is placed as low as 40years.It begins to be serious and alarming, andobservance of the practice reaches its peak inthe very day when the reasons for it have dis-appeared. \nAs this is written, the country has on itsbands an unemployment problem that disquietsthose who know its","cbCaimDuRwacxxkT","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimDuRwacxxkT","pdf",567043,14,"English","# SHALL WE SCRAPHUMAN
