ASSOCIATION& \nSIDGWICK AND JACKSON,LIMITEDI939 \n— \nOn 18January 16oI/2 the following entries were made inthe Stationers³Register: \nIo.Busby. \nEntred for his copie vnder the hand of m Seton/A \nbooke called. An excellent &pleasant conceitedcomedie of Sr Io ffaulstof and the merry wyves of \nvjd \nwindesor \nArthureEntred for his Copye [vnder the handes of]by assigne-Iohnsonment from Iohn Busbye/A booke Called an excellentand pleasant conceyted Comedie of Sir Iohn ffaulstafeand the merye wyves of windsorvjd[Register C,fol.78 recto] \nThe two entries are in different hands:the bracketedwords are deleted. \nThe significance of this simultaneous entrance andtransfer is uncertain;it has, however, been suggestedthat Busby, having procured the manuscript but notwishing to publish it himself, sold it to Johnson, who, being perhaps suspicious of the manner of its acquisition, insisted on Busby taking responsibility for the entrance. \nThe edition published by Johnson in pursuance of hisassignment is a'Bad Quarto³,the text of which is shorterthan, and inferior to,that which was subsequently pub-lished in the First Folio.(The nature of the differencecan be judged from the fact that whereas in the Quartothe text fills only 1624 typographical lines, the Globeedition counts 3018 lines in a text based on the Folio.)The printer was Thomas Creede,as appears from hisinitials in the imprint.Five copies of the Quarto areknown, preserved in the following libraries:BritishMuseum(Heber-Daniel-Huth),Bodleian Library(Steevens-Malone),Trinity College,Cambridge(Capell),Folger Shakespeare Library,Washington(Devonshire),Huntington Library,California(Locker Lampson). The initial leaf before the title, which is blank exceptfor a large signature 'A'on the recto,is wanting in allcopies except those in the Bodleian Library and atTrinity College,Cambridge. \nThe present facsimile has been made from the veryfine copy at the British Museum(press-mark,Huth 48),except for the first leaf, which has been supplied from theTrinity copy.* \nThe Quarto text is only in a very general sense parallelto that of the Folio, and therefore to that of moderneditions, and the problem of adding marginal referenceshas consequently presented unusual difficulties.Thestandard act and scene divisions have been inserted in sofar as the scenes are present in the Quarto, and an attempthas also been made to give the correspondences with thelines of the Globe edition, for the sake of facilitatingreference from one text to the other. These numbers, however, only indicate very roughly the concordance ofthe two texts.Substantial transpositions are of courseindicated by the numbering, but no attempt has beenmade to locate misplaced lines and incidental echoes(except in a few scenes, such as IV.iv,in which theQuarto text differs almost completely from the Folio, though embodying apparently scattered reminiscences).Nor has any notice been taken of lines that have strayedin from other scenes,or even occasionally from otherplays.A facsimile is no place for critical work on the text. \nThe divergence of the texts makes it impossible to usethe Globe numbering as a means of reference to theQuarto, and some other had to be devised. It seemedsimplest to refer to it by pages(signatures)and type-lines.To facilitate this a star has been placed in the margin \n*Two reproductions were issued in the‘Shakspere-Quarto Fac-similes’supervised by F.J.Furnivall.The first, issued in 188I,wasmade from the imperfect Devonshire copy, supplemented (so it wasasserted)from the Huth copy. This was very unsatisfactory, and thebulk of the stock is said to have been destroyed in a fire at thepremises of the lithographer(Griggs)in 1883.A new and betterfacsimile was then made from the Huth copy and issued in 1888,with an offer to supply copies to subscribers in exchange ","cbCaisepUUHQyJXU","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisepUUHQyJXU","pdf",3749809,72,"English","# Stationers’ Register entries\n## Johnson’s
