Sterling  \nAbout the Author  \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com)  \nMy first autistic hero appeared in a terrible MF regency trilogy I published back in 2014. I am both deeply ashamed and immensely proud of Spencers In Love because it was my first attempt at writing and publishing a whole novel and put me on this path and led us here. As the mother of a severely autistic young man, it gave me a sense of comfort to “see” autistic adults falling in love and finding their happily ever afters. My son will never understand or experience romantic love, but I can give the world characters similar to him and watch them succeed and thrive and bring readers joy. Hopefully, a few like my son.  \nSir Alastair Spencer is also why I have written so many queer men. That first trilogy is packed with every stale regency romance trope I could fit in. It’s probably problematic in ways I can’t even begin to imagine because I was deeply uninformed and heavily influenced by classic regency authors like Laurens and Quinn. But I wrote Alastair to explore what it would be like to be autistic during the regency period and how a person like that would be perceived by the ton.  \nAlastair was straight, yet in the reviews for the first two books in the trilogy, a few readers asked if he might be gay and one reader swore she’d never pick up another one of my books if he was. His book, the third, had already been written at that point and his love interest was baked into the first two books so there was no going back. But after that, I switched pen names and wrote a gay regency novel, Waiting For Mr. Ashwell, just to spite them and it was AWFUL.  \nIt did pretty well, to my surprise. Better than my MF trilogy, so I tried another but this time, contemporary. Building Heat did even better and I suspected that part of the issue with the Spencers and Mr. Ashwell was that I was writing in the wrong period. Regency is really hard! It’s a ton of research if you want to write a decent regency and those readers know their stuff.  \nAfter that, I remained K. Sterling and have done a heck of a lot more research to educate myself about writing queer men and autistic characters. I wrote Hide And Keep featuring Dr. Aiden Sharp, my first diagnosed autistic main character in 2015 and I’m still writing him and will not stop for as long as I have a brain and a keyboard. He’s grown and changed along with me as I learn more about autism and improve as an author. He will continue to as well.  \nI’ve written other characters on the spectrum since Alastair and Aiden but Skylar Sutton is probably the most autistic hero I’ve written to date. Tome, it’s always been important to be clear and upfront about my character ’s abilities because I don’t see the point of being vague or subtle when it comes to representation.
