Mitchell \nSouthern Cross University \nAbstract: Throughout the time of my teaching career, the tide has exposed changes in the nature of music, students and music education. \nThis paper discusses teaching and learning in contemporary music at \nseven critical stages of 21st century music education: \ni) diverse types of undergraduate learners \nii) teaching traditional classical repertoire and skills to contemporary music students \niii) transitioning undergraduates through pre-service teaching into the workforce \niv) supervisory pedagogy for creative work higher degree research models \nv) upskilling established teachers in musical practice and pedagogy \nvi) professional development for adult community musicians \nvii) disseminating learning back into music and teacher education. \nConstant elements in this landscape are musicianship, practice, creativity, employment, aesthetic expression and personal fulfilment. \nShifting sands include characteristics of learners, pedagogy, delivery, technology, industry trends, and learning through consecutive career stages. The final scenario addresses challenges for musicians and teachers to maintain their creative practice through self-directed \nlifelong learning \nIntroduction \nOne two three four five six seven, that’s heaven. \nSeven six five four three to one, life’s begun … \nSeven steps to heaven Lord \n(help me) climb that road \nSteady but uneven Lord \n(help me) climb that road \nWe're so unbelievably strong yet so ill at ease \nWe ascend as we please \nWe'll be standing at those gates \nSeven steps create.
