On day 1, the parent or teacher may take more responsibility to show the child how to sort the words and on subsequent days, the child takes more responsibility to sort it on her own. \nOn one of the days that the child has cut apart and sorted the words by their pattern, ask her to copy the sort by writing each word into the Written Sort chart (pg. 4) . \nThe question at the end of the written sort! This is an important step with word sorts! \nWhile sorting, discuss the patterns that the words in the same column share. For example, the words in the first column have the ch pattern, words in the second column have a cl beginning blend and words in the third column have an initial cr blend. \nWhile word study doesn’t hinge on rules (because these are so easily“broken”), it does rely on generalizations. Generally speaking, a child can see that when a word has the ch pattern, the two letters work together to form one sound while cl and cr are blends, you can hear both sounds. \nBy asking your child to answer this question, you are helping him to make some generalizations about how word patterns work. And, she can use these same generalizations for other words in his reading and writing! \nBOB Books: Set 5, Book 7 (Chickens) \nCreated [by Becky @](by Becky @ www.thisreadingmama.com)[ ](by Becky @ www.thisreadingmama.com)[www.thisreadingmama.com](by Becky @ www.thisreadingmama.com) \n©2014 All Rights Reserved. \nInitial ch, cl, and cr \nDirections: Cut apart the ch, cl, and cr chickens and use as headers.
