On day 1, the parent or teacher may take more responsibility to show the child how to sort the words and on subsequent days, the child takes more responsibility to sort it on her own.
On one of the days that the child has cut apart and sorted the words by their pattern, ask her to copy the sort by writing each word into the Written Sort chart (pg. 4) .
The question at the end of the written sort! This is an important step with word sorts!
While sorting, discuss the patterns that the words in the same column share. For example, the words in the short o column only have one vowel (o), while the words in columns two (o_e) and three (oa) both have vowel combinations that make the long o sound.
While word study doesn’t hinge on rules (because these are so easily“broken”), it does rely on generalizations. Generally speaking, a child can see that when a word has only one o in it and is surrounded by consonants (CVC), it makes the short o sound. In general, a word that has a vowel combination of o_e or oa makes the long o sound.
By asking your child to answer this question, you are helping him to make some generalizations about how word patterns work. And, she can use these same generalizations for other words in his reading and writing!
BOB Books: Set 5, Book 6 ( The Visit)
Created [by Becky @](by Becky @ www.thisreadingmama.com)[ ](by Becky @ www.thisreadingmama.com)[www.thisreadingmama.com](by Becky @ www.thisreadingmama.com)
©2014 All Rights Reserved.
Short o/Long o Word Sort
Directions: Cut apart the short o and long o toads and use as headers. Cut apart the word cards in the sort. Read each word. Sort under the short o toad or long o (o_e/oa) toad, depending on the vowel pattern.
Not all of these words are from the text.

|
|
|
|
| --- | --- | --- |

| toad | stop | stone |
| --- | --- | --- |
| flop | road | phone |
| drove | coat | lost |
| cross | joke | load |
| cloak | smoke | rock |
| honk | hop | float |
| broke | soap | cone |

The Visit ©2014 All Rights Reserved.
BOB Books: Set 5 Book 6 Created [by Becky @](by Becky @ www.thisreadingmama.com)[ ](by Becky @ www.thisreadingmama.com)[www.thisreadingmama.com](by Becky @ www.thisreadingmama.com)
[www.thisreadingmama.com](www.thisreadingmama.com)[ ](www.thisreadingmama.com)©2014 All Rights Reserved .
Written Sort: After you have sorted your words, write them here under their correct column.
BOB Books: Set 5, Book 6 ( The Visit)

| o
(short sound) | o_e
(long sound) | oa
(long sound) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |

In general, what do you notice about the words and their patterns?
Color by Vowel Pattern
toad
honk
phone
joke road
coat
smoke float
stop cross
treat
stone drove
lost
Color
short o = redo_e = blue oa = green
BOB Books: Set 5, Book 6 ( The Visit)
Created [by Becky @](by Becky @ www.thisreadingmama.com)[ ](by Becky @ www.thisreadingmama.com)[www.thisreadingmama.com](by Becky @ www.th","cbCailX4JgYUTPL9","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCailX4JgYUTPL9","pdf",1749601,29,"English","# Word Study Activities
## Word Sort and Written Sort
## Color by Vowel Pattern
## Word Hunt and Matching Games
## Write the Word and Word & Picture Matching","[{"question":"What vowel patterns does this pack practice?","answer":"It focuses on short o and long o patterns shown as o_e and oa."},{"question":"How does the Written Sort activity work?","answer":"After cutting and sorting words by pattern, students copy the sort by writing each word into the Written Sort chart.
