The guide also flags YA titles for ages 14–18 and includes next year’s ORCA nominees for early preview and voting.","Senior Reading Recommendations 2024 \nHere is your recommended summer reading list. Please use it as a guide to select the books you read this summer. You will notice that we have organized the titles by genre: realistic fiction; historical fiction; dystopian fiction; fantasy; science fiction; graphic novels; mystery and adventure; non-fiction; biography & memoir; and poetry. Most titles should be available as ebooks and audiobooks at your public library or local bookstore. \nWe made this list to address what we know of you as readers, but also to introduce you to new and exciting titles we’ve discovered this year. Of course, there are so many more great books out there for you to explore, and there are new books being published all the time! A few of our favorite curated lists can be found here and here. You can use these links to find even more books to fill up your summer reading stacks. \nNote: “*YA” indicates books written for Young Adults in mind. These books are targeted toward 14-18 year olds and are suitable for more mature readers. They may include content that is uncomfortable to students and/or their families. \nNote: at the end of this list you will find next year ’s ORCA (Oregon Reader ’s Choice Award) nominees for the 2024-25 school year. This is for those of you who would like to get started reading the books on the list. They will all be available in the Arbor Library next year and we will vote for our favorites in April 2025. \nTo a summer filled with joyful experiences of many kinds. Happy lazy-day reading! \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nREALISTIC FICTION \nYou Are Here by various authors \nIn this collection of stories set in a crowded Chicago airport, events sparked by racist aggressions, cultural expectations, peer pressure, and insecurities, intertwine the journeys of twelve young Asian Americans. \nThe Labors of Hercules Beal by Gary D Schmidt \nThis book is about a seventh grader, Hercules, who must complete the 12 labors of Hercules from Greek mythology in real life. The book is set in a small town on Cape Cod and is told from the perspective of Hercules Beal, a middle schooler who is still grieving the death of his parents. He is being raised by his older brother Achilles and his girlfriend Viola, who Hercules suspects is a vampire. He's skeptical of his teacher's assignment because he's the smallest kid in his class and there are no Nemean Lions or Hydras. \nRosewood: A Midsummer Meet Cute by DasGupta Sayantani \nThis romance novel retells Sense and Sensibility in a modern setting. The story follows Eila Das, a literary purist and feminist who reluctantly attends a summer camp where campers are being considered for a TV show similar to Bridgerton. While at the camp, Eila falls for Rahul, a fellow Shakespeare fan, but must decide whether to trust him after learning he has been dishonest about his past. Eila must also navigate the drama of the camp and the show to make it through the summer. \nSimon Sort of Says by Erin Bow \nSimon and his family move to Grin and Bear It, Nebraska, a National Quiet Zone town without internet, cell phones, or television. Simon hopes to escape the public attention from an event that saddled him with viral fame and start seventh grade as a new kid. The more he tries to suppress the truth about his past, the harder it may be to tell his new friends. Simon makes friends with Agate and Kevin, who support eachother as they deal with different types of pressure and look for coping mechanisms. \nWings in the Wild by Margarite Engle \nThe story follows Soleida, a 16-year-old Cuban girl who flees to Costa Rica for asylum after a hurricane destroys her home and exposes her parents' secret sculpture garden, which they created to protest the Cuban government's criminalization of art. While stranded in Costa Rica, Soleida falls in love with Dariel, a Cuban American boy whose music can enchant animals and birds.
