is eight feettall.The person confined therein straddles a sharp blade.Hisfeet are shackled and he must keep his legs straight to avoidbeing wounded by the blade.A table is placed within his reachcontaining provisions and drinks to quench his thirst,but aguard is there night and day to prevent him from touchingthem.When the victim weakens,he falls on the edge of theblade,which inflicts deep and cruel wounds.The wretch pullshimself upright from the pain,only to again fall on the cuttingblade,wounding himself horribly.This torture lasts three orfour days.  \nIn this type of apparatus,the convict dies because heresists—because he tries,desperately,to escape death.Theatrocity of the torture lies in the way it transforms every move-ment by the body to protect itself from pain into a new agony.The slightest reflex of preservation becomes the impetus forthe most unbearable suffering:this is what defines such modesof annihilation.What is remarkable is not the novelty of thetorture,over which the modern colonial system certainly hadno monopoly.The scene,along with the rhetorical device usedto re-create its horror,resonates with another torture narra-tive,namely,the story of Damiens as described by MichelFoucault at the outset of Discipline and Punish.2However,thetwo cases are entirely different.As Foucault shows,thewounds inflicted on Damiens's body are not aimed at him as  \nSELF-DEFENSE  \nan individual but instead intended to restore the all-powerfulwill of the sovereign and the subjugation of the community,which the crime had jeopardized.Mutilations by pliers andshears,scalding hot lead,boiling oil,and molten wax,andfinally dismemberment by horse...throughout this atrociousordeal,Damiens remains tied up,and there is nothing tosuggest that he could do anything.In other words,minimal asit may be,his power is in no way taken into account,preciselybecause it does not count.Damiens's body is reduced to noth-ingness;it is already nothing other than a theater where avengeful community can act out cohesion and ritualize thesovereignty of its king.It is a display of the complete absenceof power,the better to express the magnificence of
