\nReport to Senior Electronics Engineers &Managers \nFebruary 1974Volume 93,Number 2 \n# SEEING THROUGH SODIUM WITH ULTRASONICS\n\n\"Seeing\"through the liquid sodium in a breeder reactor orthrough other opaque types of 11quid now is possible withan ultrasonic viewing technique developed at the WestinghouseHanford Engineering Development Laboratory,Richland,Wash. \nThe \"IS0-SCAN\"technique gives a three-dimensionalrepresentation,or isometric projection,of an objectthrough a fluid medium.HEDL's C1iford Day told Electro-Technology,\"This process is a synthesis or combinationof the standard B-scan,which gives an elevation or sideview, and the C-scan,which looks down on an object givingthe diameter, length,or width. \n\"By putting in the x and y position of the ultrasonictransducer with the z coordinate—which corresponds to thetime-of-flight of the pulse in the liquid medium—we geta three-dimensional representation, which is transformedinto two dimensions on a CRT or strip chart recorder by alittle analog computer.\" \nThe transducer is typically made of lead-zirconium-titaniumand operates at temperatures up to 260 C(500 F)at 5 MHz.As it is driven by high voltage,it produces sharp energypulses in the liquid medium(oi1,water,liquid sodium, andso forth)at about 1,000 times per second. \nLike radar,Day explains, the pulses are reflected off theobject back to the transducer, which scans in a x-y plane, pulsing and receiving. Each received pulse is analyzed bythe analog computer circuitry which decides,on the basisof threshold voltage, whether or not to produce a dot onthe CRT screen. In this way,a number of paralle1 linesare produced, representing the object in height, width, and depth. \nAnother unique feature of the system,Day adds,is oncean object is scanned, the tape-recorded data can be replayed \nConyright®1974,by Industrial Research,222 S.RiversidePlaza,Chicago,I11.60606.Reproduction prohibited withoutpermission. \nto generate any view, angle,or perspective desired.Thisa1lows the operator to detect hidden flaws, locate unknownobjects, and make numerous measurements without havingto rescan the object. \n\"In previous breeder reactor environments,\"Day says,\"therehad been no system that would allow pictures of componentsin the 1iquid sodium. This is the only technique thatlets you see through the sodium,or any opaque liquid,in a three-dimensional manner.\" \nWhile the ISO-S CAN viewing technique might also have otherapplications, such as with industrial robots,Day admitsa definite limitation exists in that scanned surfaces mustbe more or less perpendicular to the acoustic beam. However, with new advancements in transducer design, this may beovercome. \n# VIDEO-ON-FI LM FOR NEW 'HOME MOVIES'\n\n\"New tricks for an old dog\"might we11 paraphrase the recentmarriage of laser recording on conventional photographicfi1m.The result is a low-cost,high-resolution,video-audio television recording and playback system. \nWhile the use of magnetic tape for recording TV signalsis wel1 known, several companies have been prompted toinvestigate recording on discs, similar to LPs.MCA Corp.,for example, developed a system that uses a low-poweredHe-Ne laser beam to deflect off grooves on a \"Mylar\"disc. \nNow,another company, called i/o Metrics,1s recordingblack-and-white and color video-audio signals with a \nmodulated laser beam onto a spinning disc of high-resolutionblack-and-white photographic film. The readout, which isclaimed to be of superior quality,is accomplished simplywith a conventional 50 W incandescent white 1ight bulb. \nAs Peter Woh1mut,president of IOM,told Electro-Technologyin an interview,\"Recording TV signals on high-resolutionphotographic fi1m has several advantages.Unlike otherprocesses using actual grooves, the track is embeddedphotographically into the film and read optically.Sinceeach disc is protected with a plastic coating, smudgesand skin oils won't disturb its performance. It can evenbe rolled up with no 111 effects. \n\"Disc reproduction is also no problem ","cbCaiswyLGMqaOBU","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiswyLGMqaOBU","pdf",3320029,"English","# SEEING
