This new assessment measures student performance in the areas of English/Language Arts and Mathematics in grades 3-8 and grade 11. The test replaces the CMT tests other than the science components in grades 5, 8 and 10. \nHow does the Smarter Balanced Assessment address student achievement? \nThe Common Core State Standards (CCSS) have been adopted by Connecticut, 44 other states, four territories and the District of Columbia as the basis for developing and implementing curriculum that supports all students in becoming “college and career ready.” Two testing consortiums have been awarded the rights to develop assessments that measure student outcomes on the CCSS. Connecticut, along with 25 other states, will administer the Smarter Balanced Assessment to measure those outcomes. The test this year is part of the final developmental phase of the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment. It replaces the CMT and CAPT as Connecticut’s measure of student achievement in English/Language Arts and Mathematics. This year’s assessment also measures the effectiveness of test questions at each grade level and will assess the technology capacities of the system. \nWhat grade levels will be tested? \nAt the middle school level, grades 6, 7, and 8 will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment and grade 8 will take the Science CMT. \nHow will the test be administered? \nThe SBAC test is a computerized assessment students will complete online. The CMT science test will be administered using traditional test booklets. \nHow long does it take to administer the test? \nThe total amount of time will be similar to the CMT. Testing is broken into four sub-tests which are estimated to range from 60 – 120 minutes each with the expectation that students may complete the test over many days in 75 minute intervals. The actual test is untimed. A block schedule will be followed during SBAC testing days. \nWhy are West Hartford students taking this test instead of the CMT this year? \nThis year, Connecticut has offered all districts a choice in the administration of required testing: 1) maintain the current CMT/CAPT assessment for one year, 2) administer the full Smarter Balanced Assessment, or 3) administer both sets of tests. The CMT /CAPT Science Test requirements remain for Grades 5, 8 and 10 regardless of the district choice. West Hartford, along with all but approximately 20 Connecticut districts, has elected to participate in the Smarter Balanced Assessment to prepare staff and students for full implementation in 2015, and to prepare for the technological demands associated with this test. This assessment will: \n􀁸 Give students practice taking online tests, \n􀁸 Make students and teachers more familiar with the test questions which are different than those on CMT, \n􀁸 Assist the district in determining the strength of curriculum and instruction as related to the Common Core State Standards, and \n􀁸 Allow for assessment of our technology readiness to administer online tests. \nWhy must students take CMT Science? \nThe test is still required by state law for all students in Grades 5, 8 and 10. \nHow is my child being prepared to take this test? \nSedgwick teachers are preparing students for these assessments through instruction in curriculum that is aligned with the Common Core State Standards and in use of technology to acquire and respond to tasks that are similar t","cbCaiqicHmcO0Z5X","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqicHmcO0Z5X","pdf",419977,"English","# Spring Testing Overview\n## SBAC Grades and Purposes\n## Test Administration and Time\n## Why West Hartford Is Choosing SBAC\n## Preparation and Reporting\n# Testing Dates and Contact","[{\"question\":\"What tests are students taking this spring?\",\"answer\":\"Students will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC) for English/Language Arts and Mathematics, and grade 8 will also take the Science CMT.
