The newsletter cites safety guidance that drowsy driving can be as dangerous as intoxicated driving and may contribute to a significant share of fatal crashes. It then provides practical actions: sleep 7–8 hours, avoid alcohol, review medication side effects, watch peak sleepiness hours, and stop safely if fatigue hits, including short naps and caffeine.","# Seatbelts Are For Everyone\n\nDon't Be A Turkey &Drive Drowsy! \nPicture this:It's a brisk Thanksgiving Day.You rush to get to the television remote, beating your siblings just to turn on theannual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Paradeeagerly waiting to see the iconic Snoopy,Ronald McDonald,SpongeBob SquarePants, and Mickey Mouse! \nThe house is filling up with all the smells ofpumpkin pie, cranberry sauce (if you like thatsort of thing!),and the traditional turkey andstuffing! All morning long you try to sneak justthe slightest nibble of food, but your mom ison you like a hawk. \n“Get out of the food! You can't have any untilthe family gets here!Go eat a Wild Berry Pop-Tart if you're hungry!” \n\"Pssh!That's fine by me!\"you say (IYKYK).…. \nFINALLY!!!All your family shows up,Aunt Bethany brings her questionableJello salad,Uncle Lewis reeks of cigar smoke, and a heavy dose of BruteClassic cologne, and all your cousins sit around the table and load up on thatgiant yard bird!Luckily, you wore your stretchy pants for the feast so you canbreathe a little better after devouring 12 hours of hard work and preparation in15 minutes. \nAfter dinner, your family packs into your Ford Fiesta,Aunt Bethany and UncleLewis get into their wood-paneled Station wagon, and you all drive aroundtown to see the neighborhood's Christmas decorations while listening toMariah Carey's AIl I Want For Christmas Is You As your dad drives, younotice the car hitting the rumble strips several times.Apparently, tryptophan isa real thing after eating enough turkey for a small village because your dadcan't keep his eyes open!\"Dad,wake up!\"you yell at him from the back seat. \nDriving drowsy, whether that is from simply not getting enough sleep due toscrolling TikTok all night,binge-watching the latest true crime show on Netflixthe night before,or stuffing your face with turkey on Thanksgiving Day,isextremely dangerous! \nIn fact, according to the National Safety Council,21%of all fatal crashes mayinvolve a drowsy driver. You are also 3x more likely to be in a car crash if youare fatigued! What's even crazier is studies have shown that losing 2 hours ofsleep is equivalent to having consumed 3 beers!Drowsy driving is just as badas intoxicated driving, folks! \n\"What can I do to drive alert?”I'm glad you asked! You can: \n1.Get adequate sleep daily,7-8 hours minimum. \n2.Many teens do not get enough sleep at a stage in life when their biologicalneed for sleep increases, which makes them vulnerable to the risk of drowsy-driving crashes, especially on longer trips.Advise your teens to delay drivinguntil they're well-rested. \n3.Avoid drinking any alcohol before driving.Consuming alcohol interactswith sleepiness and increases drowsiness and impairment. \n4.Check your prescription and over-the-counter medication labels to see ifdrowsiness can result from their use. \n5.If you drive, avoid driving during the peak sleepiness periods (midnight-6 \na.m.and late afternoon). If you must drive during the peak sleepiness periods, stay vigilant for signs of drowsiness, such as crossing over roadway lines orhitting a rumble strip, especially if you're driving alone. \n6.If you start to get sleepy while you're driving, drink one to two cups ofcoffee and pull over for a short 20-minute nap in a safe place, such as alighted, designated rest stop. This has been shown to increase alertness inscientific studies, but only for short time periods. \nNHTSA estimates that in 2022,693 crash deaths involved drowsy drivers! That's a lot of family members not making it home to enjoy the Macy'sThanksgiving Day Parade and the feast! So,do yourself [and others]a favorand turn the television off,put your phone on the charger, and get somesleep! And maybe not eat ALL the turkey…And remember, you drive lousywhen you're drowsy!
