These lists are not exhaustive. They are designed to suggest a range of sources to inspire students. The original lists produced in 2017 atthe beginning of this specification remain valid. Given the huge range of global work available, only a tiny selection of works can be cited here. For the most part, these have been selected because there are freely accessible materials to support teaching and learning.
Smart History ([www.smarthistory.org](www.smarthistory.org)) is an online source with a huge number of short videos and articles which are ideal for teachers to share with students during lessons.
Art History in Schools ([www.arthistoryinschools.org.uk](www.arthistoryinschools.org.uk)) is another source of freely available material written by teachers to support this A Level.
The Pearson A Level mark schemes also contain a huge amount of relevant material and these have been cited with the appropriate year of examination here.
Resource links were checked at the time of going to press, but should also be easily accessed by entering the name of the work/ artist into any search engine.
As always, teaching and learning needs to focus on the selection and discussion of relevant parts of the work to suit the investigation required by the specification. Examination questions will always require a student to select and explore the significance of specific information or choices, not merely to regurgitate a list
of general facts.
B1 Nature in Art and Architecture

| SCOPE | PRE 1850 | Resource link/s | POST 1850 | Resource link |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Landscape or seascape in 2D | Fan Kuan Travellers among Mountains and Streams, c.1000 | A Level Mark Scheme 2022
Link to resource | Uzo Egonu Northern Nigerian Landscape 1964 | A Level Mark Scheme (Paper 1: November 21) |
| Landscape or seascape in 2D | Zhengming, Wintry Trees, 1543 | Art History in Schools
resource | Helen Frankenthaler The Bay 1963 | Link to resource |
| Animals in 2Dor 3D | Maria Sybella Merian Metamorphosis of a small emperor moth, 1679 | Link to resource | Kehinde Wiley Rumours of War, 2019 | Link to resource |
| Animals in 2Dor 3D | Tipu’s Tiger 1782-99 (V&A) | A Level Mark Scheme (Paper 1, June 2023) | Michael Rakowitz The Invisible enemy should not exist (Fourth Plinth Lamassu) 2018 | Link to resource |
| Plants in 2D or 3D | Rachel Ruysch Fruit and Insects, 1711 | Link to resource | Veronica Ryan Custard Apple, Breadfruit and Soursop, 2021 | Link to resource |
| Plants in 2D or 3D | Ogata Kōrin, Red and White Plum Blossoms, Edo period, 18th century | Link to resource | Yayoi Kusama Yellow Pumpkin, 1994 | Art History in Schools
resource |

| SCOPE | PRE 1850 | Resource link/s | POST 1850 | Resource link |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Plants in 2D or 3D | Wu Zhen Bamboo, old tree and rock, 1338 | A Level Mark Scheme (Paper 1, June 2024) | Yinka Shonibare Hibiscus Rising, 2023 | Link to resource |
| Elements in 2Dor 3D | Joachim Beuckalear:
The Four Elements: Earth, 1569 | Link to resource | Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Earth’s Creation, 1994 (earth) | Link to resource |
| Elements in 2Dor 3D | Joseph Wright of Derby
An Experiment on a bird in an Air pump, 1768 | Link to resource | Yinka Shonibare Wind Sculpture, 2014 (air) | Link to resource |
| Elements in 2Dor 3D | Francisco de Zurbaran,
A Cup of Water and a Rose, c.1630 | Link to resource | Kara Walker, Fons
Americanus, 2019 (water) | Link to resource |
| Relationship between wo/ man and nature in 2D or 3D | Ryōanji (Peaceful Dragon Temple), Kyoto, Japan, 1450 | Link to resource | Agnes Dene, Wheatfield, 1982 | Link to resource |
| Architecture | Bishu Maharana, The Konark Sun Temple, 1250 | Link to resource | Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre, Gregory Burgess A","cbCaiuGedhU9QMcT","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiuGedhU9QMcT","pdf",248230,"English","# Scope of work lists
## Smart History and other resource sources
## B1 Nature in Art and Architecture
## B2 Identities in Art and Architecture","[{"question":"What is the purpose of the 2024 scope of work lists?","answer":"To make the A Level History of Art qualification more inclusive and to support teachers with resources for works beyond the traditional canon."},{"question":"Are the lists exhaustive, and do the 2017 lists still apply?","answer":"The lists are not exhaustive.
