\nSOME NOTICE \nLIFE 0F CHARLES HALIDAY. \nMERCHANTS are not much given to the making of books.Few merchantsThey seldom leave behind them any of their own compos-authors.ing,save their cash books and their ledgers. There canscarcely be named a merchant in the ranks of literarywriters, except Rogers, author of the“Pleasures of Memory”and other poems, rather satirically described by Byron as“the bard, the beau, the banker.” \nBut a banker is not a merchant, and often gives no moreto the bank than his money and his name, and employshis time and his leisure as he likes. \nWhence comes this disinclination to literary labour?Itis not so much perhaps that the merchant's mind is tooabsorbed in business to leave him leisure as that it woulddetract from his character to be suspected of literary pur-suits. \nPoetry was at one time held to be as derogatory to a lawyer.Sir Richard Cox had a strong bent to poetry(says WalterHarris). He wrote some lines on the death,in 1696,ofLord Chancellor Porter,Sir Richard being at that time aJudge of the Common Pleas. But his verses being trans-mitted to his friend and patron,Sir Robert Southwell,SirRobert wrote in reply that poetry was not the way to pre-fernient,but a weed in a judge's garden. \nPoetry is classed among the liberal arts.If there beilliberal ones perhaps they may be those having the directpursuit of wealth for their aim. \nHaliday's taste \nfor literature. \nSOME NOTICE OF THE \nSoldiers,artists,lawyers,all pursue wealth, but glory isassociated in their cases with gain, and .they sometimesprefer their glory to their gain;but with merchants theirsole aim is wealth, wealth is their glory, and the pursuit ofit renders all other pursnits tasteless. That it is not wantof leisure may be known from this that lawyers, physicians, prime ministers, and others as fully absorbed by their pro-fessions as merchants are,yet find time to essay their pens.Rabelais said of the monks of his day that they consideredit a monstrous thing to see a learned monk.A literarymerchant is nearly as great a monster. \nThe poet Crabbe, who has described a merchant as“aneating, drinking, buying, bargaining man,\"notes the dis-taste of merchants for literary pursuits, which they consideras inimical to a mercantile career. He makes one of themwarn his young charge, who has shown an inclination tothe Muses, against indulging a taste for poetry and letters.\"He,when informed,\"says this youth— \n“how men of taste could writeLooked on his ledger with
