Who in 1982 would have imagined that a social disease (AIDS) would completely reverse the sexual freedom of the 60s and 70s, or who would guess that the communist grip on half the world would finally weaken and free us from the fear of nuclear war – a concern that many of us had been bearing like a milestone for our whole life. Or who would have ever dreamed that in the course of American culture the very lowest phylum of the arts would rise to the top. And here’s where I make my point.  \n“In the perpetual revolution of modern art, representational images and humanist warmth and expression have systematically been purged out of the visual arts. In the last decades, a visually starved audience has been driven to the “low” arts to nourish a neglected need. Hence comic books, movie posters, trading cards, and tattoos have become the last refuge for strong, dramatic, representational imagery. This low art is seriously challenging International Fine Arts. The anonymous tattoo artist in the sleazy waterfront shop is now being reassessed, documented, and studied. Journeyman practitioners have reached the status of masters. One of these noted veterans is Jonathan Shaw.  \n“Jonathan, a long-time friend, stands high with peers like Ed Hardy as a member of the first generation of truly recognized modern demographic masters. Jonathan and his fellow Tat-Masters have been responsible for the meteoric rise of interest in tattooing.
