CAT-Computer-Adaptive Testing is derived from a massive bank of digital questions and prompts. The student takes the exam on a computer or electronic device, and his or her test path is determined by the success rate. If the student is doing well, the digital test uses an algorithm to adjust the difficulty and provide subsequent harder questions. If he or she is struggling, the test will once again adjust and pull less-difficult questions from its bank until the student begins to answer questions correctly. Then the student will return to grade appropriate questions. For more information, watch a webinar or visit a fact page. \n2. Performance Task-Performance Tasks will provide a measure of the student’s ability to integrate knowledge and skills across multiple [content] standards—a key component of college and career readiness. This will involve a collection of questions and activities that are coherently connected to a single theme or scenario. \nSBAC Tip \\#2-Resources \nThere are resources available online! Attached you will find a list of helpful online resources when preparing your students for the Smarter Balanced Assessments. \nSBAC Tip \\#3 – Sample Tests \nTake some sample tests. (using DRC Insight Online Assessment Tool located on the desktop of any school computer) \nSample tests available for students include word comprehension and reading analysis sections as well as sample writing questions. Taking these practice tests throughout the study period will help students familiarize themselves with the organization and tone of the exam, as well as giving them experience with the types of questions they will face when taking the test. Taking the practice tests will also allow students and teachers to assess problem areas as well as student progress. \nSBAC Tip \\#4 – Resources for Parents \nProvide informational resources to parents. Use the Family Guide provided and direct parents to the SBAC website. \nSBAC Tip \\#5 – Item Types \nPrepare students for the different test item types \nThe Practice and Training Tests include examples of all of the question types that students will encounter on the Smarter Balanced Test. \nHere is a video tutorial that shows how students will interact with different question types. \nSBAC Tip \\#6 – Tools \nShare an overview of the student tools with your class. \n[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbefFbYjq08](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbefFbYjq08) \nThis is a 4 minute video to show students all the different tools available to them on the test, and how to use each one. \nSBAC Tip \\#7-Technology Skills \nThe Smarter Balanced assessment asks students to use a variety of technology skills to respond to multiple formats of questions. Using Google Apps can strengthen technology skills needed in the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) . \n\n| | | How Google Docs can help:\u003Cbr>(Image from Google Apps for Education) |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| In the ELA portion of the test, some of the questions require students to highlight phrases as part of their answer.
