As the army passed by, women from all the towns of Israel came out to meet King Saul with singing, dancing and music making.  \nAnd the women sang to one another as they celebrated,“Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands.”  \nBut King Saul became very angry when he heard them praising David. He thought to himself,“They are praising David more than me. Next they will want to make David their king.” So Saul became very jealous.  \nBut Saul's son Jonathan loved David very much. Jonathan promised David that he would be his friend forever. Then he gave David his robe, and his sword, his bow and his belt.  \nOne day as King Saul was listening to David play his harp, a harmful spirit from God took control of the king. Saul hurled his spear at David, trying to kill him. But David quickly jumped out of the way and was not hurt.  \nSaul had appointed David as army commander over 1,000 men. David was successful in all his battles because the Lord was with him.  \nEveryone in Israel loved David, except Saul.
