The Earth appears as a tiny dot between the two diffuse outer rings, on the right side of Saturn at about four o’clock. \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nPREFACE \nS atumorsnt isEanotrthlhkee; rgestot theeepstlanenortsth, neorfarthe sthestm, estthe; ithsttarstththee \ncoldest. It is not even the only one with rings. However, it is the showcase of the solar system: arguably, it is by far the most stunningly beautiful object in the solar system. \nThe prolific nineteenth-century astronomy writer Richard A. Proctor, whose Saturn and Its System was first published in 1865, found it necessary to apologize for devoting an entire book to one planet. \nIt might appear, at first sight, that a single planet, however interesting or elaborate the scheme of which it is the centre, should rather be made the subject of a chapter than of a volume, even of the moderate dimensions of the present.1 \nBy way of justification, he pointed out that much of what he wrote about Saturn was applicable, with suitable changes of detail, to the other planets of the solar system. \nWhat Proctor wrote now seems rather quaint. Thanks to the efforts of another century and a half of telescopic observations from the Earth, fly-by missions (by Pioneer 11 in 1979, and Voyagers 1 and 2 in 1980–81) and an orbiter mission ( Cassini, which circled the planet between 2004 and 2017), we now know far more about Saturn and its system of rings and satellites than was known, in his time, about the Earth. But it is also true that much of what we have learned is applicable – with suitable changes of detail – to the other planets, most notably Saturn’s fellow and sunwards giant, Jupiter, and to the outer giants, Uranus and Neptune, which have rings and icy satellites. \nProctor saw in Saturn’s ring a vision of the nebular hypothesis of Pierre Simon de Laplace (1749–1827), in which the planets themselves formed from a ring of material surrounding the proto-Sun. In fact, we now know that the rings are debris left over from the break-up of several small moons. But the nebular origin of the solar system has now – with suitable changes of detail – been largely validated, and Saturn (with Jupiter, Ur","cbCaioLH188nIGqj","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaioLH188nIGqj","pdf",27796962,3,1,221,"English","en",105,"# Preface\n## A pale yellow star\n## A strange ringed world\n## Saturn in depth\n## Aesthetic rubble (the rings)\n## Cassini’s epic mission\n## Saturn by moonlight\n## Observing Saturn\n# Appendix\n## Saturn data\n## Saturn ring data\n## Saturn moon data\n# References\n# Bibliography\n# Acknowledgements\n# Photo acknowledgements\n# Index","[{\"question\":\"本书的核心研究对象是什么？ ,"https://schema.org",{"og:url":52,"og:type":88,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":59,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":90,"canonical":52},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":25},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":93},[94,98,102,106,111,116,121,124,129,132,136],{"id":21,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":95,"show_sort_weight":96,"slug":97},"Story & Novel",90,"story-novel",{"id":48,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":99,"show_sort_weight":100,"slug":101},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":53,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":103,"show_sort_weight":104,"slug":105},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":107,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":108,"show_sort_weight":109,"slug":110},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":112,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":113,"show_sort_weight":114,"slug":115},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":117,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":118,"show_sort_weight":119,"slug":120},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":122,"slug":123},30,"research-report",{"id":125,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":126,"show_sort_weight":127,"slug":128},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":127,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":130,"show_sort_weight":127,"slug":131},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":133,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":134,"show_sort_weight":133,"slug":135},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":137,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":138,"show_sort_weight":107,"slug":139},19,"General","general"]
