You have until the day of the test to \ndecide which one to take, so don’t worry about this too much in the beginning. Try studying the concepts first and you’ll most likely realize it along the way. \n❖ How is the test formatted? \n➢ All questions on the Biology E/M subject test are multiple choice and are each worth 1 point. There are 80 questions total, which are divided into two parts: \n■ The first 60 questions are general biology questions (“core” questions) . \n■ The next 20 questions differ depending on whether you take Biology E or M (“specialized” questions) \n❖ How to study for the test: \n➢ Use any and all resources on the College Board website! After studying the material, use these to test yourself! These can be found at [https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat-subject](https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat-subject) \ntests/subjects/science/biology-em. Review your incorrect answers and be sure to find out WHY they were wrong. \n➢ Watch free Khan Academy videos on YouTube. These videos can be a great resource to use as well! Take notes on it (pause if you need to) and review them \nagain later. Here’s the playlist: [https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsaui3l](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsaui3l)P1prBV4Owrc0SamLWBZF2KQlz \n➢ Prep books. Prep books for SAT Biology E/M can be helpful, but aren’t a necessity. If you do decide to buy one, I personally recommend the one by Barron’s! Use all online tests provided. \n➢ Be prepared to make educated guesses. It can be a great skill to use the process of elimination to make an educated guess when taking the test! If you really aren’t sure, then skip to the next question to make sure you have enough time to finish. \n**Study guide starts on the next page!** \nUnit 1: Biochemistry \nStructure of Atoms \n❖ Atoms are made of: \n➢ protons: positive charge, mass = 1 amu, located in nucleus ➢ neutrons: neutral charge, mass = 1 amu, located in nucleus ➢ electrons: negative charge, mass = 0 amu, located outside nucleus \n❖ Electrons can move from lower level of energy to higher level of energy (or excited \nstate) by absorbing energy \n➢ ground state-lowest level of energy \n❖ isotopes-atoms of same element that have different \\# of neutrons \n➢ radioisotopes-radioactive isotopes that decay with a half-life; used for medical \ndiagnosis (tracer), research, and carbon dating \nTypes of Bonds \n❖ bond-when the same electron (or electrons) is attracted by the nuclei of 2 atoms to \nbecome stable ➢ To break one, energy is absorbed. To create one, energy is released. \n❖ ionic bonds: electrons transferred; one atom (anion) gains electron(s) and the other \n(cation) loses electron(s) \n➢ Examples: anion: Cl- , F- ; cations: Na+, Ca2+❖ covalent bonds: electrons shared and a molecule is formed \n➢ 2 types of covalent bonds: \n■ nonpolar covalent bond-electrons are shared equally between 2 alike atoms (ex. H2 and O2) \n■ polar covalent bond-electrons are shared unequally between 2 different atoms (ex. CO and H2O) \n❖ intermolecular attractions: occur between molecules; Some are: \n➢ polar-polar attraction-occur between polar molecules, which have stronger attractions towards each other \n− end of polar molecule attracts + end of other \n■ \npolar molecule (ex. H2O) \n➢ hydrogen bonding-important to life because: \n■ attaches 2 strands of DNA double helix together \n■ causes water molecules to stick to each other, ","cbCaiftrLS2PCF1q","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiftrLS2PCF1q","pdf",636967,72,"English","# Biology E or Biology M?\n## Test format\n## How to study\n# Unit 1: Biochemistry\n## Structure of Atoms\n## Types of Bonds\n## Hydrophobic & Hydrophilic\n## Special Properties of Water\n## pH\n## Organic Compounds","[{\"question\":\"Biology E and Biology M focus on what topics?\",\"answer\":\"Biology E emphasizes biological communities, ecosystems, populations, and energy flow.
