Grace Chesney Chief Accountability Officer

| OVERVIEW:
The SAT is published by the College Board and scored by the Educational Testing Service. The SAT is a standardized test designed to measure high-school level knowledge in three sections: critical reading, writing, and mathematics. Each section is scored on a scale that ranges from 200 to 800. The maximum total score of 2400 is reported as the composite score and comprises scores from all three sections. Most students take the SAT during their junior or senior year of high school, and almost all colleges and universities consider the SAT, in addition to other student information, when making admission decisions.
The ACT is published by ACT Incorporated. The test assesses high school students' general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work in four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science. It also includes an optional writing test that measures skills in planning and writing a short essay. The score range for each of the four tests is 1 to 36. The composite score is the average of the four test scores earned during a single test administration, rounded to the nearest whole number. ACT results are accepted by all four-year colleges and universities in the United States.
The 2013 HCPSS mean SAT combined score of 1653 is 21 points greater than the mean SAT combined score of 1632 in 2012.
HCPSS continues to outperform the state and nation on the SAT according to the data for the graduating class of 2013. Among graduating HCPSS seniors, 80 percent took the SAT during high school, compared to 69 percent of public school graduates in Maryland and 43 percent of public school graduates nationally. The average SAT score for HCPSS graduates in the class of 2013 was 1653, 170 points greater than the average for all Maryland schools (1483) and 155 points greater than the average for all schools nationwide (1498) . |
| --- |
| RECOMMENDATION/FUTURE DIRECTION:
Targeted and aligned work needs to continue to address gaps between student groups and ensure that all students are receiving a world class educational experience preparing them for career and college success. |

Submitted by: Approval/Concurrence:
E.
