\nthe michigan hell \nDECEMBER 1967 \n水alute to SantaClaus... \nSanta is the star of the show. \nThe entertainment meets with approval. \nx \n◆a Christmas Who's Who \nSANTA CLAUS,the greatest superman in history, wasin trouble.Michigan Bell had decided to hold all 21 ofits children's Christmas parties on the same day, andnearly 10,000 employees'children were eagerly expect-ing his appearance. \nTo Mrs.Claus he admitted sadly,\"I just can't be atevery party. There aren't enough hours. The popula-tion explosion has caught up with me.\" \n\"Santa,\"she answered,\"you’ve always had problems.Either a toy slowed the assembly line,or some childneeded special attention,or you fretted about an over-loaded sleigh making it around the world without amajor overhaul. You always solved them in less timethan it takes you to go up a chimney, and you've alreadysolved this one.Right?” \nMrs.Claus was right. He had a solution.Years agowhen Santa alone could no longer make all the toysneeded,he had enlisted the aid of elves and steppedup production. Now it was time to call for more helpers, men who could serve as stand-ins for Santa at some ofthe parties \nWhen Santa first had sensed this,he began takingnotes on men he'd met.He watched forjolly understand-ing men, patient men,and most of all men who likedchildren. He also noted how close they resembled himin appearance. \nSo Santa was ready;and now that the decision wasmade,he began to phone homes throughout Michigan. When the conversations were ended,he turned to Mrs.Claus and announced,\"Michigan Bell's all set, dear. Our Christmas staff has just been increased by 17 Com-pany Clauses.\"(continued) \nIt appears one of Santa's earliest recruits was CharlesGogo,Rockford. He's been go-go-going to the GrandRapids parties for 16 years and finds each year moreexciting than the last. \nGogo points out that playing Santa can be a heart-warming experience both figuratively and literally.Santa's suit of heavy material, the wig and the beardcontribute to the warmth needed at the North Pole, orduring a Michigan winter. But in an auditorium filledwith several hundred children, the suit is often too heavy. \nGogo has a partner at the Grand Rapids party,JerryDeschaine. He clowns. \n\"I enjoy it,\"explained Deschaine,\"playing the clownis great!” \nAt one party, when Deschaine's son was three yearsold, the lad tagged along behind his dad assuring theother children,\"You don't have to be afraid of him. He's my dad!” \nDeschaine's act always includes a skit with Santa, \n多alute to多anta Claus \nSanta is a family man. \nInspecting his sartorial splendor. \nand at the same party, his small son trudged up on thestage and announced loudly,\"Daddy,you just toldSanta a lie.\" \nEdward LaCount is Sault Sainte Marie's MBT Santa. This year marks the ninth time Santa has recruitedhim for the Sault MBT party. \nLaCount also appears as Santa for the Knights ofColumbus. He said he keeps the parties in mind allyear by cultivating the acquaintance of neighborhoodand co-workers'kids.At the 1966 Bell party, there wereabout 125 boys and girls present and LaCount knewmany of them by name.\"In fact,\"he commented,\"thechildren here get perturbed when they see Santa down-town and he doesn't know their names.” \nPossibly the largest Santa in the entire state is BobLyle,in Traverse City.He weighs 284 pounds andwears a size 52 Santa suit.It fits perfectly withoutpadding.\"I don't need a pillow,\"he remarked.\"Mineis built in.” \n米 \n◆◆ \n米 \nand a lot of preparation \nMrs.Claus makes last-minute adjustment. \nLyle has played Santa at Traverse City Christmasparties for 14 years. He always tries to briefly hold allthe tiniest children on his lap.\"Some of the little kidsI first held on my lap,\"he said,\"are now telephone oper-ators here today.\" \nBesides performing at the Bell party last year,Lyleperformed at churches and hospitals. He visited thementally retarded children at the State Hospital, thechildren's wards at Munson Hospital and the ward forold ladies.\"Bless their hearts,\"said
