The work argues for understanding Johnson beyond the most famous Boswell narrative, using quotations from Johnson’s writings and detailing how his early life, poverty, health, and move to London shaped his career as a professional author. It also discusses Johnson’s role in the literary world and his connection to contemporaries like Boswell and David time:scholar, poet,Parliamentaryreporter, essayist, moralist, critic, lexicographer and a character whosetalk and opinions illuminate the best-known biography in the language, the Life by James Boswell, which first appeared in I79I. \nIt has been the author's purpose to show Johnson in his grandeurindependently ofBoswell. This he is able to do through quotations whichspring from long acquaintance with the entire range of the sage's work.Sir Sydney Roberts, who was Master of Pembroke College,Cambridge, has written much on Johnson, always with point and wit, alwaysrelating his learning to the daily life which was dear to Johnson's heart.'Why,Sir’,Johnson once said,Fleet Street has a very animated appear-ance,but I think the full tide of human existence is at Charing Cross.'Itis partly this insistence on humanity, and on actuality, which continuesto make Johnson so fascinating, and it is one of the aspects of hispersonality which emerges most strongly from Sir Sydney's pages. \nJohnson's bibliography is large and complicated. In this field,as in hisexpository essay,Sir Sydney has provided a thoroughly useful guide. \n# Bibliographical Series\n\nof Supplements to‘British manyreaders tend to separate Johnson the writer from Johnsonthe man as displayed by Boswell. \nFundamentally,the distinction is unsound. It wasJohnson's writings that first attracted Boswell, and if thereader wishes to recapture the Boswellian aura,he must doas Boswell did and study the works of the man who becameknown as the Great Moralist and the Great Lexicographerwhile Boswell was still a schoolboy. This simple chrono-logical reminder is the best critical antidote to the ancientfallacy that Johnson was made by Boswell.Of course,Boswell's ultimate triumph in Johnsonizing the land'was supreme. But the old view that ‘it was the object ofBoswell's life to connect his own name with that of John-son'contains little more than a dangerous half-truth.Boswell wished his name to be associated with many otherfamous names besides that of Johnson, and his wish wasfulfilled. But among all his schemes for the attainment ofliterary fame, there remained at the back of his mind thepossibility of a magnum opus, and for the subject of his cul-minating work he chose Johnson. Why?The answer, orthe foundation of an answer, can best be found in a con-templation of Johnson's early career and of his position inthe world of letters at the time of Boswell's introduction tohim in I763. \nⅡ \nWhen Johnson came to try his fortune in London, hewas twenty-eight years of age.The son of a not verysuccessful bookseller in Lichfield,he had left Oxford afterfour terms without a degree.Poverty and ill-health made \nhis prospects poor. After an unhappy experience as an usherin a grammar-school,he moved to Birmingham where hechanced upon some hack-work (notably the translation ofLobo's Voyage to
