God directs Samuel to go to Bethlehem, where Jesse lives, and guides him to use olive oil and a sacrifice to the Lord. Samuel arrives, reassures the town, and gathers Jesse’s sons for the ceremony. Though Samuel initially suspects Eliab, God teaches that selection is based on the heart rather than outward appearance, beginning the choosing process for David.","045 Samuel Anoints David \n1 Samuel 16 \nEnglish Spiritual \n045 Samuel Anoints David \nEnglish \n© 2020 Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/) \nYou are free to make commercial use of this work. Then the Lord said to Samuel,“Take olive oil and go to the town of Bethlehem, where Jesse lives. I have chosen one of Jesse’s sons to be king.” \nSamuel replied,“How can I do that? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.” The Lord told Samuel,“Take a calf with you. Say you have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Invite Jesse to the sacrifice. I will show you what to do.” \nSamuel did what the Lord said. But the leaders of Bethlehem were frightened when Samuel arrived there. \nSamuel said,“I have come to sacrifice to the Lord” and that reassured them. As the Lord had instructed him, Samuel invited Jesse and his sons to the sacrifice. \nWhen they arrived, Samuel saw Jesse’s son Eliab. Samuel thought,“This one is surely the Lord’s choice.” But the Lord said to Samuel,“People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. This is not the one.” \nThen Jesse told his son Abinadab to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said,“The Lord has not chosen this one either.”","cbCaivteP3GX9mtl","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivteP3GX9mtl","pdf",3412957,1,22,"English","en",105,"# 1 Samuel 16\n## Saul’s rejection and God’s command\n## Samuel’s journey to Bethlehem\n## The sacrifice and the choosing\n## Eliab rejected; heart over appearance","[{\"question\":\"Why is Samuel sent away after Saul’s rejection?\",\"answer\":\"Because Saul was disobedient, the Lord rejected him as Israel’s king.
