We trained for this!  \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com)  \nOne  \n‘So…’ Dix Harangay settled himself comfortably at the conference table and smiled at the alert, expectant look on Alex’s face.  \nFirst Lord of the Admiralty Dix Harangay was making a visit to Therik, timed so that he would be able to meet with Alex von Strada and give him these orders in person. They were meeting in Alex’s office, a blandly impersonal space. A picture window to one side gave a view across a parade ground to the neat, busy little town that was the Fourth’s base. Beyond it, along vista of heather-covered moorland shaded into the blue of distant hills. The parade ground was already deserted, the formal parade to welcome the First Lord dismissed some time ago.  \n‘You already know, of course, that you’re going to Samart,’ Dix observed, and Alex gave a confirmatory nod.  \nOf course he knew. The news that the League was sending a squadron to Samart had been all over the media for weeks. The Senate had ruled that this must be a ‘full view’ mission with the media given unprecedented access, so the mission was already public knowledge. It had not yet been officially confirmed that the Fourth Fleet Irregulars was going to be heading up that squadron, but only, as the First Lord had asserted, because he refused to confirm that to the media before the officer concerned had received those orders themselves. It was a point of etiquette Dix felt very strongly about, but even so it was obvious to any viewer that this was a pure formality, merely confirming what everybody already knew.  \nOf course the Fourth was going to Samart. It was unthinkable that they would not. It had been the Fourth, after all, who’d made first contact with Samart, and the Fourth which had been instrumental in developing that relationship through the officer-exchange program.  \nMore recently, and much more importantly, the Fourth had undertaken a mission to Marfik. They’d discovered that the Marfikians were long dead, their homeworld a seared and blasted ember for centuries past. Their ships however, known as Thorns, were still being produced by a fully automated mining and factory set-up on a moon within the system.  \nThe Fourth had blown up the factory and the moon with it, meaning that once the Thorns currently out there had been found and destroyed, the tyranny of the Marfikians would be over. Since most of the Thorns were besieging the system of Samart, that was the obvious place to start in dealing with them.  \nAlex knew for sure that the League could not be doing any better for Samart than sending them this squadron, and he was proud of being a part of that endeavour. All he wanted to know now was exactly what his role was going to be.  \nAlex knew already that both the Samartians and the Congrave had asked for the Fourth to have a leading role, as a unit they both trusted and held in high esteem. The League’s own Senate, too, had been keen to push Alex into the forefront, though perhaps for rather less noble reasons.
