It is important to catch and store water in as many ways as possible.  \nWater may also contain unseen germs that carry disease such as diarrhoea, typhoid and other intestinal infections. Drinking contaminated water is one of the main reasons for ill health. The whole community should be made aware of the risk of diseases carried by impure water and of the need to keep water pure.  \nRain water is pure, and methods should be devised to catch it, say from the roof of a house, and to store it in barrels. Perhaps a communal system can be devised within a village to catch and store the water in a large covered tank.  \nShallow hand dug wells can also be dug to supply groundwater, but they need to be protected to keep dirt from falling in.  \nDeeper wells with pumps or a rope and bucket are even better, as water from a depth is usually cleaner.  \nThe Need to Keep water Pure  \nSome impurity in the water supply is natural-it comes from insects and animals that live in and near watercourses. But much impurity comes from poor human and domesticated animal sanitation. A clean environment and training in sanitation will prevent contaminated water from infecting the water supply, and enable the health of the whole community to improve.  \nBuild an outside toilet and train everyone to use it.  \nRainwater collected from the roof catchment tank is a good source of water, but it can be spoiled if the catchment tanks are not kept clean. Purified water can easily become contaminated again if the containers used to store or carry it are dirty.
