S COTT LYALLOK!lahoma\n\nOK!lahoma \nDaniel Adler,Scott Lyall \n# Sculpture as Settlement\n\nDANIEL A DLER \nThe given name Oklahoma suggests a variety of images:a Broadway musical,a terrorist bombing, perhaps a Midwestern landscape.Or when it is givenas the name for a project of sculpture,it might imply some kind of staging,or an artist's desire to make statements. But in the work of Scott Lyall, theuse of names and their images is less a matter of defining the objective statusof sculpture, than of mapping the variable connections and differences thatmight reveal new parameters for a sculptural subject.Oklahoma,in this work,is described as a keyword. It is separated, but linked to the search for a sub-ject.As a name it is a means—both a constraint and a carrier—for collect-ing the images that might configure this subject. And yet, even those familiarwith Lyall's challenging cuvre may enter the gallery space anticipating somekind of narrative correspondence between the exhibited objects and theirnominal references. One feels encouraged to open thought to these disparatereferences, although none seems to settle on any subject completely. It's as ifthe artist wants to pre-load the gallery visitors with baggage,to make thembear in advance their own desires or expectations for easy access to mean-ing or the pleasurable consumption of images.Only then, with these expec-tations of availability and access, might the work be perceived as exposing its \ndifferences—and indifference—to the performance of symbolic identities.Lyall's work frustrates our desire for symbolic identity. And in the absence ofa direct solicitation of meaning, visitors find themselves searching througha diffusion of elements for a trace of the sculptural means that has mappedthem, and for the words that might usefully recount or describe them.Lyallhimself refers to sculpture in terms of symbolic inefficiency:its relative slow-ness and opacity in registering the dynamic content of images, and its per-ceived obsolescence as a contemporary medium. He thinks of sculpture asan effort to seize this inefficiency—not perform it ironically or claim itsexcesses and autonomy—but“to move through the trials and the impasseof identity that are a part of the experience of all sculptural subjects.”IfOK!lahoma, his recent work for the Art Gallery of York University, can beread as a vehicle for insisting on inefficiency,it nevertheless achieves its sculp-tural effects in remarkable ways, beginning when we first scan, survey, orsimply try to describe it. \nI look intently at what is given, including the names and their images.I want to speculate about this question of the sculpture's efficiency. What aresome of the æsthetic, ethical, and political motivations for embracing a notionlike symbolic inefficiency? What are the discursive features of a work in thiscontext, its art historical precedents, and underlying assumptions? \nThe task of description is daunting in itself. The gallery at York is a window-less shoebox.Upon entering,I notice that the longer axis of the room is \nSCU LPT U RE AS SETTLEMENT \ndivided by three structural elements, each twenty-eight feet in length, andmade of inexpensive and readily-available plywood. They resemble sectionsof fencing with a smooth painted finish, although their stylization and heightof only twenty-nine inches diminishes any sense I might have of a represen-tative use value. No ‘reality'context can be established for these structuresbeyond their rectilinear division of the gallery interior, and their presenta-tion of the image of multiplied parallel lines.Along the shorter axis of theroom, extending from one wall to the other,is a stacked construction ofparticleboard panels and Styrofoam. This stack forms a low-lying platformthat suspends from the three dividing elements to straddle the space of thegallery. It hovers roughly eight inches above the dark concrete floor.Smalleritems are arranged around these structural elements:chipboard risers, fabricconstructions, printed paper,figu","cbCaiaR4CkoRIBPz","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiaR4CkoRIBPz","pdf",4039159,54,"English","# Sculpture as
