It examines the literary impact and the unique stylistic qualities that FitzGerald imparted to the original Persian verses during the Victorian era. The text highlights the divergence between the original work and the translator's interpretation, discussing how FitzGerald's creative liberty transformed the poem into a piece of significant English literary history. The excerpt includes a sample stanza demonstrating the evocative imagery used in this classic translation, which remains a cornerstone of English poetic scholarship and one particular trans-lation done so divinely well by Edward FitzGerald, when the Victorian era was at its most self-centredand self-sufficient stage of development. \nThe poem made so little mark on its firstappearance-so little mark with the critics and thegeneral public, that is to say-that the originaledition, passing out of sight, became presently adelightful rarity for the next generation of second-hand book-lovers to unearth, for the high appreciationin two kinds which was then awaiting it-the literaryand the monetary. And it remains essentially, likeall other translations-even the authorised version ofthe Bible-a second-hand book. \nFor the translator of poetry and vision alwaysstands between us and the original. And whatever \nthe beauty,or the exact meaning of the original mayhave been,in this case we can hardly doubt that, forEnglish minds, the translator has given to it areconciling beauty aad flavour of his own, whichmake it more acceptable to all but scholars orpedants. \nOf this, indeed,we have proof in the very free andpliant variants of the rival versions-the earlier andthe later-which are so fortunately available;and it isonly necessary to compare FitzGerald's amended formof the opening stanza with his original,to realise howlarge a liberty he gave himself when rendering intoEnglish the richly-coloured similes of the East. \n\"Wake!For the'Sun
