It addresses how post–World War II changes in rope materials—especially the shift from natural fibres to synthetic fibres—necessitated new splicing techniques. The book keeps enough knotting and supplementary information to make splice descriptions self-contained, while pointing readers to other specialist knot and wire-splicing references. offibre rope splices into one volume.Whilethere are many excellent books on knotting andgeneral ropework, which include splicing in theircontents, this book is aimed at giving a morecomprehensive coverage to splicing in particular. \nIn the years since the end of World War II,whenthe first edition was written, there has been arevolution in rope materials and construction dueto the replacement of natural fibres by syntheticfibres. These have not responded to some tradi-tional ways of splicing and a new range of spliceshas evolved to suit them.Splices for all kinds ofrope are included in this book and it is believedthat the reader will find more splices describedthan in any other single volume. \nOnly sufficient knotting and other supple-mentary information is included to make thedescriptions self-contained.For information onknotting the reader is recommended to Knots andSplices by Capt.Jutsum, for fancy work to Knots,Splices and Fancy Work by C.L.Spencer or TheHarrison Book of Knots, and for wire splicing toMarline-Spike Seamanship by Leonard Popple. \nSome experienced readers may not agree withsome of the names given to splices. Many spliceshave regional names, some have more than onename, and sometimes the same name has beenV \n# PREFACE\n\ngiven to more than one splice. No doubt, theoriginators were more concerned with uses thannames. In this book those names which theauthor has found most commonly applied are used. \nIt is impossible to acknowledge all the helpgiven in supplying information for the compilationof this book, but the Samson Cordage Company,of Boston,Massachusetts, were particularly helpfulwith information on the splicing of modern braidedcordage, while the author is particularly appreci-ative of the information provided by the Britishfirm of Marlow Ropes Ltd.Percy W.Blandford.","cbCaikdS0Jherc3j","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikdS0Jherc3j","pdf",4194781,116,"English","# Preface\n## Preface to Third Edition\n## Acknowledgements","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of the book in the preface?\",\"answer\":\"It gathers many types of fibre rope splices into one volume, with an emphasis on comprehensive coverage of splicing.\"},{\"question\":\"Why were new splices needed since the end of World War II?\",\"answer\":\"Rope materials changed, with replacement of natural fibres by synthetic fibres that do not respond to some traditional splicing methods, leading to new splice types.\"},{\"question\":\"Does the book include enough knotting information to understand the splices?\",\"answer\":\"Yes.
