F.VAN LAAN is a member of the Department of English at RutgersUniversity. \nThe idea that the world is a theatre in which each individual human beingplays out the part assigned to him by God,who is both the playwright andthe producer of the drama of life, was one of the great commonplaces of theRenaissance and one to which Shakespeare alluded frequently. \nShakespeare's plays, however, transformed this familiar notion from acliché to a fertile source of invention. In the past two decades, and especiallysince the publication of Anne Righter's Shakespeare and the Idea of the Playin 1962,the idea has received considerable critical attention. This new worksupplements and extends recent studies by examining in detail the functionof the histrionic metaphors, both verbal and other,in Shakespeare's plays. \nIn Role-playing in Shakespeare,Professor Van Laan argues that thetheatrical allusions, disguises, impersonations, and conscious or unconsciousself-misrepresentations which abound in these plays exemplify a basicconcern with role-playing that substantially affects characterization, action, structure, and theme.Surveying the evidence contained in the plays them-selves,he defines the term ‘role'and proceeds to explore some importantgeneral aspects of the topic, including the conception of identity implicit inShakespearian characterization, the relation of role-playing to dramaticstructure, and the recurring theme of the discrepancy between the actor andhis part.He then describes the patterns that the role-playing materials assumein the various dramatic genres, comedy, history, and tragedy. The final chapteris a study of one of the primary sources of action in Shakespeare, the internaldramatist. \nThe wide scope of this enquiry, taking in all of Shakespeare's plays, andthe thoroughness with which Van Laan has pursued his argument provide acoherent and illuminating perspective on two of the most intriguing qualitiesof Shakespeare's work as a whole:the sense of continuity and the sense of anunderlying unity within such great variety. \n# Rolc plauing in Shakespcare\n\nTHOMAS F.VAN LAAN \nUniversity of Toronto PressToronto Buffalo London words quoted above asthe motto of the Globe Theatre, and even though this report may not be true,it is nonetheless intriguing. For as several studies of individual plays by Shakes-peare,and especially Anne Righter's more comprehensive Shakespeare and theIdea of the Play, have begun to demonstrate during the past decade or so,ifthis was the motto of the Globe,it provided not only a clever justification oftheatrical endeavours and a reassuring echo of a familiar Renaissance clichébut also an incisive allusion to the content of many of the plays performedthere. The theatrum mundi concept -the idea that 'the world's a stage'-wasone of the many popular tropes bequeathed by the Middle Ages to the Renais-sance,whose writers, both dramatic and non-dramatic,made it very muchtheir own through constant repetition. From Aristophanes on,moreover,es-pecially in comedy, dramatists have tended not simp","cbCainE7liNReHTS","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainE7liNReHTS","pdf",27334159,278,"English","#
