climber myself,I gladlyaccepted Commander Graham's invitation to write a Fore-word to his comprehensive description of the climbing areasin Malta,in the hope that it will be of interest to the climb-ing community in Britain and elsewhere, and that it will leadto the development of a new interest among the youngpeople of these islands \nHis description,as he is the first to admit,is only com-prehensive in the sense that it records the known andattempted climbsFor the skilled enthusiast,Gozo offersmany unexplored challenges and even in Malta much re-mains to be done. \nClimbing in a Mediterranean climate will,we hope, offera new and agreeable interest to al visitors accustomed tothe rigours of more northern climes. If they come to Maltato see what we have to offer, they can be sure of a warmand friendly welcome. \nAs for our own young people,I hope that there will nowarise a group of young Maltese climbers who with en-thusiasm,care,training and experience can master thischallenging activity and hand on to others a local climbingtradition which will lead to the further exploration of newareas and new routes in these islands. \nNot only are we indebted to Commander Graham for thispresent record of experience but also for two other 'firsts'.He and Mr.Simon Hogge 1st Loyals climbed the spire ofSt.Paul's Anglican Cathedral to give us the first photo-graphic record of its condition—to the layman a remark-able feat.He also encouraged and passed out the firstMaltese to qualify in rock climbing for his Duke of Edin-burgh's Gold Award—may many more follow on! \nI commend this Guide to all who are interested inclimbing or who are starting to learn. \nMAURICE
