Riversid \nTHE FREDERICK LAW OLMSTEDSOCIETY OF RIVERSIDE \nForward \nThe modern city has proved that man can survive understarless skies,on treeless streets,in look-alike houses.ButRiverside offers more than survival. It offers the opportunityeach day to stand back from the concrete and steel of thecity,to refresh. The gracefully curved roads and generousopen spaces planned by Frederick Law Olmsted still implyleisure, contemplativeness and happy tranquility. \nAs our century draws to a close, the natural landscape isbeing trampled by man and covered by his structures.Weare on the threshold of an era when children will go to abotanical garden to see plants and trees in the same sensethat children now go to a zoo to see horses and cows. \nIf the urban sprawl cannot be stopped,Riverside shouldbe preserved as an historic memorial of what might havebeen.. \nMore hopefully,we believe it should be preserved as acontinued example to all the world of the choiceness andbeauty than can be achieved in a suburb. \nRiverside as we enjoy it today began on August 19,1868,when the most eminent Landscape Architect in America cameto Riverside by invitation of the Riverside Improvement Com-pany to design the first planned suburb in the UnitedStates.Frederick Law Olmsted described the spot in a letterto his wife...\"a river(Aux Plaines)two hundred feet wideflowing slowly on limestone bottom, banks generally sandyand somewhat elevated above the prime level bearing toler-able trees, many nice elms...a village in a park.” \nThe following story starts a million years before that day.In a short space it also takes us forward to one hundredyears thereafter. \nThe future story of Riverside will be written by you.Whether Riverside will be a successful community five orone hundred years from now, changing but at the same timeretaining its good qualities, depends on you.One hundredyears from now the world will be more crowded and frantic. Will Riverside still imply leisure, contemplativeness and hap-py tranquility, with people living together as families,enjoy-ing much in common? They will if we treasure FrederickLaw Olmsted's masterpiece. \nThe Frederick Law Olmsted Society of Riverside \ntet W.8dikin \nRoBERT W.HEIDRICHPresident \nTake the curved road—leave the hot crowded highway West,Feel the cooling breath of the tall trees and their shade; There are glimpses of a river and pools where childrenplayed; \nPeople who dashed off to work are coming home to rest. \nNow the road to the city is short by rail, \nBut to travel it took long years through the past;Jesuit, fur trader,Indian trail,Stagecoach and settler at last. \n# Riverside a Village in a Park\n\nA MILLION YEARS AGO the massive mile-thick glaciersof the Ice Age were rearranging the topography of this con-tinent.When they finally receded for the last time, carvingout their gift of the Great Lakes for us,a high ridge remainedaround Lake Michigan. But Nature fortunately formed abreak or channel in this ridge beginning in our area of whatis now Riverside and Lyons, and the DesPlaines River flowedthrough it during seasons of high water, joining the ChicagoRiver on its way to Lake Michigan. When the water waslow,a portage for a short distance was necessary, and theearly French explorers referred to the entire channel as \"LePortage”. \nTHE IMPORTANCE OF THE PORTAGE was incalcula-ble.Because it was by far the easiest and best route throughthe ridge,it made overland travel and navigation betweeneast and west possible.Numerous wars were fought betweenthe French and English and the Indians and white settlersfor control of the Portage, for whoever controlled it domi-nated the thriving fur trade of the great Northwest Territory, all of which was funneled through this channel. \nTHE INDIANS KNEW A GOOD THING when they sawit, even as you and
