The articulated serpent of a spine, heart bulge, the bulbous protrusion that will become a forehead. Mouse, human, chick, dog, turtle. All of us similarly carved from a nest of cells, suspended in jelly like grapes in aspic.  \nThis is the beginning of things. From this angle it is clear that we all crawled out of the primordial waters together. There is a moment before we grow arms and legs when we are lizards, all of us, salmon, whiting, whales. Tiny aquatic dinosaurs. Creatures of the sea. Fins form, pharyngeal arches that were once the gills through which we breathed. Now we do not breathe. We are breathed for. We are growing together, all the little sea monkeys in the first eight weeks of our existence. We are bird and fish and beast. The first trimester is our time in the wilderness.  \nAfter the birth it will be a tug of war between what is innate and what is learned behaviour. Impossible to untangle the web of nature and nurture, but once the process has begun the whole of it must play out. So this is just the beginning of a process, this moment when fish becomes beast, a creature not yet me but leaning towards becoming me once it is sufficiently fed and warmed and cradled.  \nBut here, now, this is my arrival on the island. The island is no more than a glass box in a hospital ward. There are vague changes between light and dark as nurses and doctors walk by. The sound of feet scraping past are the waves shushing against a shore.  \nI shiver. I blink, not yet seeing anything but, still, aware that I have arrived. I open my trembling mouth and give voice to all my hopes and fears. The wailing has an edge to it, a piercing polyphonic rattle, like throat singing or a nuclear detonation. It is the first iteration of a song that I will  \nperfect over the course of a life. It is my voice. It is a me-shaped voice. It is me.  \nI am on an island. I have been on an island for a very long time. Sometimes, rarely, I swim away from the island into the open ocean, steeling myself for random encounters that will make me anxious, angry, lonely, isolated in another ’s company. Sometimes I encounter a human being rowing a boat through the squally seas. Sometimes the human lets me cling to the boat fora while, dragging me along with them, but eventually there is too big a divide between us. I am in the water. They are in a boat.
