Higher CO2 reduces the toxin content of milkweed, the monarch caterpillar’s primary food, weakening the caterpillar’s self-protection mechanism. In experiments, monarchs raised on milkweed grown at nearly double current CO2 levels showed reduced ability to tolerate the pathogen, resulting in greater harm from infection and shorter overall lifespan. Caterpillars feeding under elevated CO2 matured into butterflies that died up to a week earlier than normal.
