Arden Shakespeare, they were,of course, unaware that they should make a special effort torecord his birthday for posterity. As a result,no one now knows the dateof William Shakespeare's birth. This lack of information about his birthdate is typical of our sparse knowledge of his whole life story. There aremany gaps in Shakespeare's biography.Actually we know less about himthan we do about Chaucer, who is two centuries further removed fromus. His baptism day, which was probably no more than a week after hisbirth,is recorded in the parish church, where you may still see the Latinentry in faded ink for the date April 26,1564.It reads:\"Gulielmus filiusJohannes Shakspere,”(William son of John Shakspere). \nJohn Shakespeare was a fairly prosperous businessman of the town ofStratford,on the Avon River in western England. He also held a seriesof town offices including the very important positions of high bailiff andchief alderman.Stratford was a busy town in Shakespeare's youth, but asmall one.It had only one school, but,as it happened,a very good one.We assume that Shakespeare attended it for the normal length of time, about six or seven years.Like most schools of the day,the StratfordGrammar School emphasized literature. In the brief period of his attend-ance,Shakespeare would have learned to read and write English, thenLatin, and finally he would have received some instruction in Greek.Itwas a limited but intensive curriculum, and it stood Shakespeare in goodstead when he turned to his own writing. But he was not to be a writer fora while yet.He was married at eighteen to twenty-six-year-old AnneHathaway, daughter of a well-to-do farmer of the area.Susanna, the firstchild, was born six months after the marriage, and the twins,Hamnetand Judith, were two years younger. The disparity in age beween Williamand Anne,Susanna's birth date, and Shakespeare's long residence inLondon away from his family, who apparently remained in Stratford—allthese facts have led to the assumption by many that Shakespeare's mar-riage was an unhappy one. After the birth of the twins in 1585,we haveno record of Shakespeare and his activities(aside from a very brief courtreference)until 1592.We do not know what work he did while livingin Stratford, nor how,nor when, nor why he went to London.Varioustraditional stories deal with this period, among them one that he was aschoolmaster for a while before leaving Stratford. \nHIS PROFESSIONAL CAREER.It is reasonable to assume that Shake-speare went to London in the late 1580's when he was in his middletwenties. In 1592,a London dramatist, obviously jealous of the\"upstartcrow”from the country, referred to Shakespeare as an establis","cbCaibRiqra9ad1A","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibRiqra9ad1A","pdf",6412896,104,"English","#
