It explains how emendations are marked in square brackets, how original and corrected forms are handled in the textual notes, and how lacunae, deletions, and marginalia are documented rather than shown in the edited text. It further details conventions for expansions of abbreviations, regularization of capitalization and letters, symbol handling for et, and the supplying of defective readings from another witness with practice\n\nWhere a form has been emended, the emendation appears in square brackets in the editedtext. The emended and the original forms are given in Textual Notes.Square brackets arealso used for the lacunae editorially provided,as well as to indicate an illegible part of thetext. All of these are documented in Textual Notes.Whenever the scribe has repeated aword or words in error, this is recorded in Textual Notes, but the repetition is corrected andnot indicated in the edited text.Likewise, the Textual Notes point out the occasionaleditorial deletions, but these do not appear in the edited text. The same applies to themarginalia found in the manuscript. All corrections and emendations made by Thorntonhimself are signalled in Textual Notes, but they are not visible in the edited text. \nExpansions of contractions and abbreviations appear in italics.Superscripts thatare not abbreviations-for example:pe and p's-are edited as a complete word.Capitalshave been regularized according to modern usage;this also applies to the medieval capitalF(ff).Apart from being used for all proper names,in keeping with manuscript practice, every line begins with a capital. The letters u/v are transcribed as they appear in theoriginal. However, because the distribution of'i’and'j'is very irregular,it has beenregularised according to modern usage.Yoghs (3)and thorns(b)have not beenmodernised, but the Tironian ‘et'is shown as‘&'.Wherever a ‘p'is placed instead of a‘y’,it has been regularized. The bar through 'l1l'has been disregarded.Paragraphs followthe manuscript;the larger capitals follow the manuscript layout and image. \nFinally,wherever B is defective, the missing text, marked off by brackets, issupplied from C with the appropriate page number in the right-hand margin. \nGlosses \nThe glosses are intended as an aid to understand the general idea of the line or passage;they do not offer a literal translation.Few lines are entirely glossed;for most lines, onlydifficult words or phrases have been glossed. If a word in the glosses starts with a capital,it refers to a capitalized word in the edited text.Glosses are separated by a slash when theydo not refer to consecutive words in the edited text. \nRichard Coeur de Lionfrom the London Thornton Manuscript \nLorde Jhesu Criste, kyng of glory,The faire grace and the victoryepat thou sent to
